In the world of speed machines, January is the start of the “big” auto show season, with Detroit the focus for introductions of new luxury models. It’s also the start of the classic car collectors’ auction season. There are boat shows in Phuket, London, Düsseldorf, Vancouver, Toronto and New York. And yacht races in New Zealand, Barbados and Antigua. It’s time to rev up for a thrill ride of a month.

Luxury Auto Shows and Auctions.

The Roar Before the Rolex 24 kicks off the racing season at Daytona; the three-day test serves as the final dress rehearsal before the Rolex 24. Access to cars and drivers at the pre-season extravaganza is an event trademark, as fans annually enjoy the public debut of several new sports cars – Jan 5-7

The North American International Auto Show in Detroit kicks off with “The Gallery,” an ultra-luxury automotive event hosted at the Cobo Center featuring a gourmet dinner and a close-up view of vintage and current models from brands such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and Rolls Royce – Jan 13; the show will be open to the public from Jan 20-27

Scottsdale, Arizona is the place to be for classic collector car auctions this month; its a good barometer of the current state of the global automotive collectors’ market. Among the events are the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, the Gooding and Company auction, and the Russo and Steele classic car auction – Jan 13-21

The 19th annual RM Sotheby’s collector car auction will be held at the Biltmore Hotel and Resort in Phoenix, with over 100 blue-chip automobiles – including a collection of 11 autos from a private California collector that ranges from one of the oldest known Alfa Romeos — a 1921 G1 — to a 2015 Ferrari California T – Jan 17-19

Catch the 86th Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo in glamorous Monaco – Jan 22-28

Rare, exotic and classic cars come to Palm Beach’s Cavallino Classic for five days of festivities, including track days at Palm Beach International Raceway; a grand driving tour of Palm Beach; an awards party at The Breakers Beach Club; the Concorso d’Eleganza on the Lawn at The Breakers; and Classic Sports Sunday, where 120 cars are on display – Jan 24-28

The Rolex 24 at Daytona is an endurance sports car classic; this twice-around-the-clock marathon has been staged since 1962 – Jan 27-28

Yacht Races and Shows.

The Phuket Rendezvous (previously the Phuket International Boat Show) will continue the dedicated superyacht event on private island Koh Rang Noi, where attendees can view a variety of vessels for sale or charter, and will also host a mariners’ market and the launch of the prestigious Christofle Yacht Style Awards – Jan 4-7

The London Boat Show showcases vessels of all shapes and sizes, as well as new water-sport trends – Jan 10-14

Barbados Sailing Week will include the 82nd anniversary of the Mount Gay Round Barbados Race – Jan 16-24

Crisscross Canada to catch two shows: the Vancouver International Boat Show, Jan 17-21;and the 60th annual Toronto International Boat Show, Jan 12-21

The 49th edition of the international boat show boot Düsseldorf will feature sixty superyachts; boot INTERIOR focuses on interior design and furnishings for mega yachts – Jan 20-28

New Zealand’s Millenium Cup takes place in the Bay of Islands – Jan 23-26

Now in its 113th year, the New York Boat Show at the Jacob Javits Center will see 58 boat companies exhibiting the latest in new yachts, gadgets, and technology, with hundreds of boats to explore – Jan 24-28

The Seattle Boat Show is the largest one on the West Coast, with boating and fishing seminars and the latest gear on display at CenturyLink Field and at the South Lake Union and Bell Harbor Marina – Jan 26-Feb 3

The Superyacht Challenge Antigua will see a fleet of sailing yachts undertake four daily pursuit races, ranging from 12 to 30 miles, along the coast of south Antigua — Jan 31 – February 4
