Don’t you just love September? The very idea of it is luxurious: golden light, the harvest, new books, fashion shows, idyllic travels, and music everywhere.

The grand luxury events include the Monaco Yacht Show; Fashion Weeks in New York, Milan, London and Paris; design show Maison & Objet; the start of the season for the New York Philharmonic, the Met Opera, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the New York City Ballet and the NFL; the US Open finals; the Last Night of the Proms; the Toronto Film Festival; the opening of the V&A Dundee; Oktoberfest in Munich; a new Picasso exhibit in Paris; and so many more.

The micro-luxuries of the month include a glass of craft beer; a great football game; the perfect sweater; and something fresh-baked emerging from the kitchen (preferably topped with hazelnut ice cream).

What’s not to like?

We know we’re not alone in this feeling. Here are some of the sparkling ways that people gather and celebrate in September around the world:

In Europe, the weather is expected to be balmy, and annual events in major cities encourage outdoor adventures. The Grande Classique is a popular annual run from Paris to Versailles; it starts at the steps of the Eiffel Tower and ends 10 miles later at the gates of Château de Versailles – the 41st edition is September 23.

In London, the annual Totally Thames month-long festival will encourage visits to the riverbank with musical performances, art installations, speakers, interactive exhibits and tours.

Oktoberfest in Germany will see crowds sample and celebrate the region’s best brews – the 185th edition will be held in Munich from September 22 – October 7.

And in Switzerland, Desalpes” (French-speaking areas) / “Alpabzug” (German-speaking areas) festivals are celebrated in September: after spending four months in the high alpine pastures, the farmers and their livestock parade down from the mountains to return to their winter farms. The cows sport floral headdresses and massive decorative cow bells. Afterward, the entire village parties – since the cows have come home.

Meanwhile, in Asia this month’s celebrations include the Mid Autumn Festival in China on September 24th. Traditionally observed to give thanks to the moon for the harvest, it’s often referred to as the Moon Cake festival. Families share meals and send lanterns skyward toward the full moon.

In India, this month sees Ganesh Chaturthi, the Hindu festival that commemorates the birthday of Lord Ganesh. The 11-day festival – from September 13th -23rd – will see beautiful handcrafted tributes in homes and public areas, and dancing and singing in the streets. We were in Mumbai once during this festival, and it’s a truly joyful experience.

Environmentalists will gather at the eco-marine Hermanus Whale Festival in South Africa to watch migrating Southern Right whales while taking part in ocean-themed activities and exhibitions with an emphasis on environmentally responsible adventures – September 28 – 30.

In addition to all of that, Labor Day in America is the 3rd. Rosh Hashanah begins Sunday September 9th at sunset and ends Tuesday September 11th at nightfall. The autumnal equinox, the first day of fall, is September 22ndYom Kippur begins Tuesday September 18th at sunset and ends Wednesday September 19th at nightfall.

Whether you’re going back to school, back to work, back to serious literature, or back to baking, we hope that this month you’ll also experience something brilliant.
