January is all about contrasts and unpredictable combinations: fire and ice, excess and restraint, tradition and modernity, cowboys and poetry, an ending and a beginning. What better moment for all of us to chart a new course?

In travel, the weather is perfect in the tropics and the southern hemisphere while North America and Europe sport iconic winter landscapes perfect for all kinds of snow sports.  There are also plenty of stylish new hotels and resorts to visit (or at least dream about).  They include  AVANI+ Samui in Thailand; Cambodia’s Shinta Mani WildThe Dixon near London’s iconic Tower Bridge; the The Shinola Hotel in Detroit; and the long awaited Times Square EDITION. In London, the  the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park has reopened its doors.

In food and drinkGwenyth Paltrow has a new cookbook, and Blackberry Farm is hosting A Taste of the South. In Breckenridge, Colorado there’s a big Belgian beer festival. In the apple region of England, there’ll be wassailing this month. And there’s a cookout in Cayman. Finally, a historic collection of Penfolds wines goes on the auction block in Hong Kong.

In the world of speed machines, January is the start of the auto show season, with the North American Auto Show in Detroit the traditional lead. It’s also the start of the classic car collectors’ auction season, with lots of shows from which to choose in the Southwest. There are boat shows in Phuket, Düsseldorf, Vancouver, Toronto and New York. And yacht races in New Zealand, Barbados and Antigua.

In the world of sports this month, the college football season concludes with a championship game in California. The NFL postseason begins, the Australian Open kicks off the new season in tennis, and there are snow sports competitions aplenty, including the Tour de Ski, the X Games and the Snow Bike Festival. Fitness kicks into high gear with the start of a new year, and there are plenty of ways to burn off holiday pounds including marathons, hot gym openings and fitness-focused cruises.

In fashion and design, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the big design and technology event in the US. One of the most significant design shows of the year is the January Maison et Objet in Paris. The City of Light also hosts the semi-annual haute couture and haute joaillerie shows this month. Plus one of the four men’s fashion weeks. There are women’s Fashion Weeks in Spain, Copenhagen and Hong Kong. And a spectacular watch show in Geneva. Finally, Catherine Deneuve’s fabulously glamorous wardrobe of Yves Saint Laurent pieces is being auctioned by Christie’s France.

In entertainment, January is kick-off time for the Hollywood awards season. Cineastes will also be paying attention to the Sundance Film Festival. The must-see movies this month include Glass, Serenity and Girl.  Back on the East Coast, there are some cool plays and shows opening, like Songs for Nobodies and Home, I’m Darling. Legendary musical acts take the stage, including Elton John and Bernadette Peters.

In the arts, New York City Ballet opens its winter season at the David H. Koch Theater this month, and Mariusz Treliński’s haunting production pairing Tchaikovsky’s and Bartók’s one-act operas, Iolanta/Bluebeard’s Castle, makes its first return to the stage since its Met premiere four years ago. Spanning nearly 40 years of the French artist’s career, Pierre Bonnard: The Colour of Memory at Tate Modern will feature close to 100 works. The Guggenheim will present a yearlong, two-part exhibition of the artist’s work with Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now.

what else is going on?

Financiers and government leaders will convene in Davos, Switzerland to debate the future of the global economy; writers will be in Jaipur for the annual literary festival; and music aficionados will be present in New York when the Jazz Congress is called to order.

Plus, the cowboys are saddling up for a poetry slam.

In addition to all of that, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday the 15th.

The official color of the year is Living Coral, so dress appropriately. We’re gonna need people to be smart in every possible sense of the word in 2019.
