Where will January take you? There are so many magical options this month. The weather is perfect in the tropics and the southern hemisphere while North America and Europe sport iconic winter landscapes perfect for all kinds of snow sports.  There are also plenty of stylish new hotels and resorts to visit (or at least dream about).  Here’s a list of some of the ones we’re keen to visit, and some of the special seasonal festivals underway around the world.  Adventure awaits!

1. asia

Shinta Mani Wild is now open and consists of luxury tented camps hidden on a pristine wildlife corridor in Cambodia’s South Cardamom National Park that includes more than 1,000 acres of land complete with a wild river, rapids, and three mammoth waterfalls.  The resort is a low-impact camp of 15 tents inspired by the spirit of the Golden Age of Cambodia during the 1950s and ’60s

Leading global hotel brand for millennial-mindsets, AVANI, has opened a 58 room and villa seaside hideaway on the quiet, lush side of Koh Samui in Thailand.  AVANI+ Samui features nature-inspired interiors, spacious accommodations, lots of nature experiences, spa facilities and plenty of pool options

The Wakakusa Yamayaki is an annual festival during which the grass on the hillside of Nara’s Mount Wakakusayama is set on fire. The mountain is located at the eastern end of Nara Park, and when it is set alight it can be seen throughout the city. The burning of the mountain itself is preceded by a fireworks display – Jan 26

2. europe

Following an extensive renovation done by Joyce Wang, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park (which is where Queen Elizabeth II learned how to dance) has reopened its doors

Located in the historic Scottish village of Braemar, The Fife Arms is a Victorian coaching inn that has been imaginatively restored of the course of the past two years.  The hotel features more than 12,000 works of art by internationally-renowned artists such as Zhang Enli, Guillermo Kuitca, Subodh Gupta, and Bharti Kher; an outstanding array of Scottish artworks; a range of activities from fishing and stalking and spa treatments, and 46 Victorian accommodations. Bonus:  the hotel is located just a few miles from the British royal family’s Balmoral estate.

Bramble Ski has opened the 6 bedroom Chalet Inoko overlooking the iconic French ski resort of Val d’Isere

The recently opened BLESS Hotel Madrid is located in the heart of the city’s Salamanca district and offers 111 guestrooms, a rooftop pool, bowling alley, spa and gym, restaurant, three bars as well as conference spaces.  The BLESS brand is built around the concept of Hedonistic Luxury, meaning that they “worship the pursuit of happiness and the good life.”  Sounds good to us!

Literary types (or those who love a good street party) should head to the UK for the annual celebration of Burns Night, which commemorates the birthday of the Scottish poet – Jan 26

Located on Tooley Street, near London’s iconic Tower Bridge, The Dixon is close to many of the capital’s landmarks, like Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe.  The design of the newly opened hotel takes inspiration from the area’s vibrant cultural heritage and will have 193 rooms, including 10 suites, with a new bar and restaurant as well

Burgh Island Hotel is an iconic Devon landmark on its own tidal island and surrounded by golden beaches and silver seas. Built in 1929 extended in 1932, has now been restored to its ’30s glamour

3. us

This month the south Dallas-located NYLO Hotel will become the CANVAS Dallas hotel.  Designed as a beacon to both artists and art lovers, CANVAS is the love child of an art gallery and a modern hotel.  Along with a renovation and redesign of the 76 suites and guest rooms, CANVAS will offer spaces for local artists to come in and collaborate with management and guests – Jan 1

The 273 room historic Biltmore Hotel in in Coral Gables has reopened following an extensive $25 million makeover

The Shinola Hotel is set to open its doors in the center of Detroit’s historic Woodward Avenue commercial district.  The 129-room property comprises two downtown landmarks—the former Singer Sewing Machine store and the Meyer Jewelry Building—and three new buildings. A skybridge installed along the rear of hotel will connect all five buildings.  The hotel is also home to retail options including a 1,600-square-foot Shinola store that opened in November – Jan 2

The long awaited Times Square EDITION opens this month.  This hotel will have 452 guest rooms with four levels of public space including a 5,000 sq. ft. performance venue and a 1,900 sq. ft. studio.  The spot will also have abeer garden and event deck overlooking Times Square

In Charleston, S.C., the Hotel Bennett is opening this month, with a classic look from Atlanta-based Design Continuum.  Located at the corner of the city’s King Street and near historic Marion Square, the 179-room property’s design was inspired by grand European hotels

4. middle east

Located 20 miles from Dubai along the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula is Al Bait Sharjah, UAE, converted from historic manor houses.  The 53-room property owned by GHM revitalizes the heritage district of Sharjah and will feature a hammam and spa. Al Bait Sharjah, which translates to “the house,” bears a distinctly Arabic design inspired by traditional majlis (places of sitting) and local crafts – Jan 1

5. latin america

After closing to undergo a $35 million modernization, the adults-only Sanctuary Cap Cana resort in Punta Cana is reopening this month.  Situated on the coveted eastern tip of the island with the aesthetic of a colonial Spanish town perched cliffside, Sanctuary Cap Cana spans more than 20 tropical acres, including 2,100 feet of pristine oceanfront
