the luxury calendar: how to have a brilliant march
In like a lion, and out like a lamb, or will it be the other way ‘round? March is hard to predict (plus there’s that unfortunate business about the Ides). But come what may, it’s nearly spring in the Northern Hemisphere: time to get focused on ending winter on a high note.
Across the globe, there will be events celebrating renewal, forgiveness, fresh starts and flowers. There will be glamorous art shows, yacht races, film premieres and food festivals. Women of power and purpose will gather in every corner of the globe to celebrate International Women’s Month. And many of us will embark upon the treasured annual rites of Spring Break.
the best events in the world of luxury in march
Here are some ideas on how to make March brilliant. Whatever your passion, there’s something wonderful waiting for you.
With multiple new cruise options, the unveiling of a new airport and lots of new hotels opening around the world, there are numerous new places to explore. On our list? The Jet-Age inspired TWA Hotel at JFK, the new Rosewood Hong Kong, and the return of the Hôtel de Paris Monte Carlo.
food and drink
There are excellent food and wine festivals in nearly every corner of the globe in March. The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival features the world’s longest lunch. One of the top craft beer festivals in the US is this month’s Philly Craft Beer Festival. If you prefer being in your own kitchen, check out the new cookbook The Italian Table: Creating Festive Meals for Family and Friends. And if you’re feeling flush, try a bid at this month’s Bonhams Whisky sale, featuring a 60-year old Macallan from 1926.
planes, yachts and luxury autos
If cars are your thing, then this is your month. In addition to multiple classic cars shows and one of the oldest auto shows in the world, Geneva International Auto Show, the new Formula 1 season gets going with the Australian Grand Prix. In the air, there’s the annual California International Airshow in Salinas. And at sea, regatta season kicks off in the Caribbean with the St. Barths Bucket Regatta and the BVI Spring Regatta.
fitness and sports
It’s the month of NCAA March Madness, and the start of the Major League Baseball season. Tennis and golf swing into high gear with the BNP Paribas Open and the annual Players Championship. And the alpine sports season comes to a close in Andorra at the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup Finals.
fashion and design
The fashion world quiets just a bit in March, while the global art world takes center stage. The Armory Show in Manhattan is the largest international art show in America. In Europe, Christie’s London will attempt to set a new sales record with a work by David Hockney. It’s the month for Singapore Design Week and Art Basel Hong Kong.
Its SXSW Music Festival time! The March film slate is a horror show led by Jordan Peele’s latest thriller, Us. On stage, there’s dramatic deception in Betrayal in London, and provocative meditations on race and the Financial Crisis with White Noise and The Lehman Trilogy in New York.
This month there are song debuts, including a piano concerto performed by Dudamel & Yuja Wang at the LA Phil. In visual arts, there are new museums opening, including the highly-anticipated National Museum of Qatar. Works never before seen in the US are on view at Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice in Washington DC. Looking for a new way to see humanity as a new season begins? Drop by Civilization: The Way We Live Now at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art.
what else is going on?
celebrations of women leaders
International Women’s Day will be celebrated on March 8 with hundreds of events worldwide. This year’s theme is #BalanceForBetter.
celebrations of spring flowers
The coming of spring in the Northern Hemisphere will usher in Hanami, the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers. Pilgrimages to view the blossoms begin in late March and last until early May. This year, the forecast is that the peak will come in March: For 2019, Tokyo’s sakura blossoms are expected to start opening around March 22, with peak bloom around March 29.
America’s National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C starts on March 20; a highlight will be Petalpalooza, an all-day event with interactive art installations, games and activities, live music and a fireworks show.
The 65th edition of the glamorous Bal de la Rose, held annually in the Salle des Etoiles in Monte-Carlo, will be held on March 23. The Rose Ball was initiated by Princess Grace of Monaco in 1954, and helps raise funds for her Foundation. A different rose and a distinct scent are selected each year as the ball’s theme.
a festival of reconciliation
The Hindu festival of Holi will be observed starting March 20. Also known as the Festival of Colors, it signifies the victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring. For many it is also a day to repair broken friendships. People gather on the streets for a giant color fight – throwing dyed powder onto each other – using the revelry as a chance to connect with others and let go of any past grievances.
Daylight Savings Time begins on March 10th, St. Patrick’s Day is the 17th, and the vernal equinox is the 20th. Mother’s Day in the UK is March 31st.
Wherever March takes you, we hope it makes you feel as if spring is in the air.
