what’s happening in pop culture this january 2020?

January is kick-off time for the Hollywood awards season, starting with the 77th annual Golden Globes. Cineastes will also be paying attention to the Sundance Film Festival and the premiere of The Gentlemen from director Guy Richie.

Back on the East Coast, there are some cool plays, and show openings. One includes the US transfer of My Name is Lucy Barton starring Laura Linney.

Pop lovers get new music from  Selena Gomez and Kesha. And a new podcast does a deep dive into the origin story of Queen Bey.

The 31st annual Producers Guild Awards will take place at The Hollywood Palladium hotel in Los Angeles – Jan 18

Guy Ritchie returns to his black comedy crime roots with a star-studded cast in The Gentleman Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Michelle Dockery and Charlie Hunnam are all on deck. The film is the tale of an American (McConaughey) trying to cash out of his London criminal empire before it gets stolen out from under him – Jan 24

Bad Boys Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) are back together for one last ride in Bad Boys For Life – Jan 30

Robert Downey Jr. will take up the mantle in a new screen adaptation of the story of Doctor Dolittle. Dolittle will be based mostly on the second book by author Hugh Lofting. Co-starring Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen. With the voices of Tom Holland, Marion Cotillard, Selena Gomez, John Cena, Emma Thompson and more – Jan 17

The 26th annual SAG Awards will honor Robert De Niro with its Lifetime Achievement Award – Jan 26

Thanks to the California Arts in Corrections Program and audio classes from KALW, incarcerated men at San Quentin and Solano State Prison have joined forces to produce Uncuffed. In the series of podcasts inmates take turns interviewing each other on a range of topics. Including forgiving abusive fathers and finding peace through yoga. Following each story, the men challenge each other’s ideas of masculinity.

The Metropolitan Opera’s podcast Aria Code is back for a second season. And its all about one thing: desire. Hosted by the Grammy Award winner Rhiannon Giddens, each episode features a different aria and explores how the performance embodies opera’s most enduring and universal theme.
