When we are once again free to roam, many of us are keen to spend a splendid day (or much more) in New York City. Literally roaming. And of course, a jaunt through the city requires a cute outfit or two. Wondering what to wear for your next visit to New York City? Our correspondent Julie Chang Murphy, New Yorker and style expert, has curated a list of chic #OOTD’s and inspiration for the best fashion and outfits for a perfect day in New York City, no matter where you roam.

As I write this from America’s Heartland, I have to say, I really miss New York City. My family and I stayed in New York through the worst of the pandemic. But then, like many of our friends, we decided to leave, and now everyone in our circle is scattered: away from the city for the summer and living in places all throughout the country.

While the Midwest has been good to us – and is giving us ample opportunities to live our best country lives with horseback riding, fishing, picking strawberries, and hiking – I will take going to an art museum any day.

As Zsa Zsa Gabor once so memorably noted in the theme song to Green Acres: Darling, I love you, but give me Park Avenue.

As an urban creature, the skyline is my mountain and the eccentric denizens of the city are my native biodiversity. Besides, the city has ruined any sightings of small woodland critters for me. I’ll always think it’s a greasy rat.

In the midst of all the alarming news, our north star is always New York City and the knowledge that it will come back like it always has. And it helps us to daydream about which places we’ll go to first and what we’re going to wear.

The Most Fashionable Outfits to wear for a day in NYC

1. The Rooftop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

One of our favorite summer outings was visiting the rooftop at the MET. Typically there are large scale sculptures that are a little mysterious and always thought-provoking.  There is a bar with majestic views of Central Park and the surrounding skyline.

We’d wear this breezy, slate-green linen top from Bondi Born ($302) with Bottega Veneta’s luxurious lambskin wide-leg shorts ($3,980). Our badly grown out pixie cut would be held back with Versace’s medusa hairclip ($325) showcasing these iridescent black pearls ($775), a find from The Real Real.

We love the simple, mod shape of this tote bag ($226) with leather straps. Another find from The Real Real- Manolo Blahnik animal print slingbacks ($165) make the ensemble sophisticated and elegant.

2. The Morgan Library & Museum

The landmark building, which was originally the private library of financier Pierpont Morgan, was always a bright spot when we found ourselves in Midtown. It has been expanded to include art galleries, performance halls, and a casual cafe. It still maintains an air of intimacy and exclusivity.

We’d try to indulge the formal library setting with Gucci’s tweed mini dress ($3,500) but wear it with Veja’s trainers ($150) for a more youthful and trendy vibe.

Celine’s oversized, vintage-inspired sunglasses ($380) lend an air of mystery while Avec NY’s double finger ring ($328) and Mansur Gavriel’s mini cloud clutch ($495) play off the rich jewel tones of the dress.

3. Brooklyn Heights Promenade

This pedestrian path is lined with grand town houses and mansions. There are sweeping views of Downtown Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s an iconic walk and one of our favorites for an afternoon of people watching, riding a carved stallion at the gorgeous Jane’s Carousel, and topping it all off with a pizza from Grimaldi’s.

We’re all about channeling that Brooklyn insouciance with this Baum Und Pferdgarten ombre stripe shirt dress ($379) and Saint Laurent’s embellished suede boots ($995) which look like they could have been in your closet forever.

There is nothing like seeing a live opera, ballet or symphony at Lincoln Center. No matter who you are, you instantly feel glamorous and cultured walking up the steps to the dancing fountain to see its world class performing art companies.

But we’d toughen it up a bit with this perfect cropped leather biker jacket from Bottega Veneta ($3,980) and Francesca Villa’s earrings ($4,835) which have a distinct heirloom-like and rock and roll quality.

5. The High Line

Walking The High Line, a public park built on a historic, elevated freight rail line, always makes us feel excited about being in the city. It’s fun to reminisce about our nights partying in the Meatpacking District down below and experience the joy of discovery seeing whatever new art is being showcased and getting a bite from the artisan food vendors.
