we love the color black for luxury gifts

Black. Is any other color so feared, yet, revered and undeniably powerful?

To start with, black animals like ravens, crows and cats are regarded as possessing supernatural powers who are portents of bad luck and untimely death. In the English language, we use black in idioms to describe all sorts of unsavory actions and situations– “blackmail,” “blacklist,” “blackball,” and “black market.” And if you’re the black sheep of your family, join the club. We know what that feels like.

And yet, black is so NOT about doom and gloom. Or about the evil and the undesirable.

In a season of light and color, black can be the most beautiful of hues. When objects and apparel are rendered in black, the details of their silhouettes come into sharp view. In other words, their very darkness can be illuminating.

Since the 14th century with the arrival of high-quality black dyes, black has been embraced by wealthy European bankers and nobility classes as a signifier of importance. Worn by judges, clergy and graduates, black- a color commonly seen as a basic staple- is nevertheless, a color that demands attention and gravitas.

At the same time, this traditional color is thoroughly modern. Juxtaposed with white or any pop of bright color and suddenly, you have a fresh and youthful graphic look.

Urban dwellers are notorious for the rainbow of blacks in their wardrobe. From skinny, faded charcoal jeans, to glossy jet puffer coats and the requisite polished black boots.

Black is always elegant, assertive, edgy and did we mention, slimming? It’s no accident that some of the world’s most highly regarded luxury brands- Chanel, Dior, Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent, rely on black to communicate a feeling of sophistication and exclusivity.

1. Luxury Gifts in the Color Black: Leather

Black leather is a timeless icon for rebels at heart. And if you followed the Fall 2019 runway shows, head to toe leather looks were everywhere.

Mackage’s Yoana Moto jacket ($850) is perfection, made with buttery lambskin and an interior jersey hood for that casual, not-trying-too hard look. You might think leather pants might be too hit or miss to gift but Rag and Bone’s Simone high rise pants ($995) come in a cropped ankle length with an elasticized waistband, sure to fit and flatter any figure. These gorgeous Tom Ford over-the-knee boots ($2,490) are an investment worthy piece for your special fashionista.

After the leather comes the lace. Ooh la la. Nothing is sexier than black lingerie whether in lace, silk (or cotton for that matter).

La Perla’s black tulle Angelica underwire bra ($240) with white floral macrame trim and delicate white point d’esprit embroidery manages to be both sweet and saucy. We have yet to find something softer against our skin than Hanro’s intimate apparel. Their Juliet pleated nightgown ($140) is sure to give her sweet dreams. For women who prefer lounging in a shirt and pant set, consider Kiki de Montparnasse’s silk charmeuse and chiffon ensemble (shirt $140, pant $170) which, with enough swagger, your gift recipient can easily wear out on the street.

3. Luxury Gifts in the Color Black: Fine Jewelry

Colorful gems usually get the attention in the jewelry category. But black can and does hold its own. There are incredible jewels in the color black: diamonds, pearls, opals, and onyx. Did you know that hematite is a favorite of lawyers because legend has it that the shiny black stone brings the wearer success in litigation? That could be black magic at work, right there.

Samira 13 ($3,200) uses black inked pearls to complement an edgy Tahitian pearl pendant topped with a diamond encrusted spike. Inlayed onyx transform Retrouvai’s diamond and emerald ring ($2,640) into modern, statement piece. If you’ve got a bohemian glamour girl to shop for, check out these Oscar de la Renta hoops ($490) made with black raffia and crystals. This art-deco inspired bracelet ($13,360) by Selim Mouzannar features diamonds set against rose gold and glossy black enamel. Swoon!

4. Luxury Gifts in the Color Black: Haute Horology.

A jet-black watch is a powerful statement. And there are some stand-outs available right now.

IWC’s Big Pilot Watch would definitely stand out in a sea of black timepieces – $36,000. We’re partial to the translucent dial on the Breguet Tradition 7027 (black and silver is the epitome of cool) – $27,400. The brooding Blancpain Fifty Fathom Bathysphere looks built to handle anything lurking in the inky ocean depths – $17,200. Cartier’s black and silver Calibre de Cartier Chronograph is a good compromise between classic and sporty – $10,200. While it’s not nearly as expensive, we tried on one of the new Louis Vuitton Tambour Horizon Black 42smartwatchs and we really liked it — it connects to Apple and Android phones, and downloads the Louis Vuitton City Guide for wherever you are in the world – $2,900.

Black can be a stunning choice for home goods.

This smoky half moon mirror ($1,196) from ABC Home could be an interesting choice for a nursery or entryway. Also from ABC Home, these organic shaped serving utensils (from $24-$32 per piece) with black resin handles will elevate any buffet or seated dinner with its minimalist and tasteful design.

Waterford’s black ice bucket ($425) really makes the crystal pattern sing. It is said in certain circles that when a friend acquires a yacht, they should be gifted with a backgammon set. Asprey’s version ($4,750) is a standout choice- made with English saddle leather and a graphic, grey scale backgammon board.

6. Luxury Gifts in the Color Black: Tech and Gadgets

Black is usually the default color for tech products and with good reason. It conveys sleekness and the quality of being cutting-edge.

For gamers, the matte black Razer keyboard ($99) garners rave reviews for registering key presses at the speed of light. Marshall’s Kilburn Portable Bluetooth Speaker ($249.99) has a heritage look with its black body and brown leather handle and can play up to 20hrs of music on a single charge.

The latest GoPro Hero 7 ($343.54) is a wonder and is the new benchmark for action cameras. With the debut of HyperSmooth, an impressive new image stabilization technology, it gives handheld video a stable and flowing look.

One of the quietest and thinnest robotic vacuum on the market is this stealthy, black Eufy ($299.99). This latest model is compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, so your busy gift recipient can be even more hands-free and spend their time meeting up with you instead. Win-win!

7. Luxury Gifts in the Color Black: Beauty

Black has been reserved for the most exclusive and possibly most expensive beauty products.

Guerlain’s Orchidee Imperiale Black The Cream ($1,340) uses the essence of a rare orchid found in Peru to minimize the appearance of visible signs of aging. It comes in a luxurious porcelain jar hand-crafted by Maison Bernardaud.

Move aside ubiquitous white creams, from Givenchy comes a face cream that is black!  Le Soin Noir ($390) is formulated from black algae, which has extraordinary regenerating properties. We were given a sample of these products in an Air France First Class amenity kit on a flight to Paris, and we arrived looking better than we ever had before, sleep or no sleep. They’re that good.

Sisley’s Black Rose Skin Infusion Cream ($195) uses extracts from Black Rose in combination with May Rose water, Shea and Camelina oils to impart a plumped and radiant complexion. We have friends who swear by all of the Black Rose products from Sisley (and given the dewiness of their skin, we’re all in).

8. Luxury Gifts in the Color Black: Gifts for Foodies

For the foodie in your life, black is a clever color to base a gift upon. It’s not the first color that comes to mind for a luxury gift, but there are plenty of luxurious options in the color black.

First, and most importantly, there is dark chocolate. Hu’s Simple Dark Chocolate ($25 for 4pack) is 70% dark chocolate and only has 3 ingredients: cacao, coconut sugar and cocoa butter, making it paleo and vegan friendly, as well as dairy-free.

Ovenly is a beloved Brooklyn bakery and it’s signature Brooklyn Blackout cake: a dark chocolate stout cake smothered in salted dark chocolate pudding buttercream ($79), can be shipped nationwide via Goldbelly.

If you have a licorice lover, Scandinavian brand, Lakrids by Bülow’s products are a must-have. This Coffee Kieni flavor ($17) features a licorice center covered in a blend of milk chocolate and coffee.

From the French house of fine teas, Mariage Frères, comes a fragrant and delicate black tea, Marco Polo ($18). And the luxurious black tin is a chic decorative item after all the tea is gone.

9. Luxury Gifts in the Color Black: Fragrance and Scented Candles.

Tom Ford Noir Extreme Eau De Parfum is like the color black in a bottle, with notes of mandarin oil, cardamom, Indian kulfi accord, orange flower, amber, and sandalwood ($180.00). Black Orchid by Tom Ford would also fit the bill. As would Bvlgari Man in Black Eau de Parfum ($77).

Novel Studios’ black candle is encased in concrete, so once it burns down, you’re left with a rough-hewn urban object for display in your home or office. The fragrance is vetiver, a grass native to tropical areas in Asia. The products are hand-poured in Brooklyn and crafted with non-GMO soy wax and three pounds of raw concrete ($52.99).

Another elegant option is Odin’s black Posala candle. It has Southern Gothic notes of pear flower, peach, honeyed orange flower, bourbon, star jasmine, perique tobacco and purple iris ($70). Personally, we love Byredo’s Fleur Fantome candle, which draws inspiration from cozying up for wintertime in Sweden, all the while fantasizing about the blooming flowers of spring ($85).

Nina Simone’s version of the folk song, “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair.” After you’ve shopped for one of these luxury gifts in the color black, give yourself the simple enjoyment of sitting in the darkness, perhaps with a cup of black tea, and take a listen to this mesmerizing ballad.

Getting into a black mood might turn out to be a precious ephemeral luxury.
