We have all had quite a challenging year as the pandemic, the election, the racial justice protests and ongoing economic stress have exposed the fissures in our society. Theres an uptick in acute stress, anxiety and depression according to a report published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

In other breaking news, water is wet.

The appeal of wellness might have once been aspirational – like haute couture. But, as you might suspect, we will all be doubling down on the practical and comforting in 2021.

2. Walking and Cycling  

People have been taking to the streets in record numbers as a means of increasing mobility. In addition to hoarding toilet paper, at one point during the pandemic, there was also a shortage of bicycles. Though in the past low-impact exercise has not been afforded the same prestige as HIIT workouts and cardio, this will change.

For 2021, we see increased enthusiasm for walking, cycling and even stretching for their mental health benefits. Wearables and apps will be popular for self-monitoring and as a gratifying way of achieving goals 

3. Food as medicine 

There is an increased emphasis on building our bodys immunity. In 2021, we will be taking a holistic approach through clean eating, superfoods, and foods that promote healthy gut bacteria. There will be renewed enthusiasm for vitamins and supplements and continued experimentation with nootropics.

Families will still be cooking at home more than ever, accelerating the growth of meal-kit subscriptions that emphasize healthy, nutrient rich food. many wonder foods will get tried in the quest to strengthen the body against infections and invasions. 

4. Booze alternatives 

Anecdotally we know that people are drinking more but here are the numbers– compared to a year ago, alcohol consumption has increased 14%, with a 41% increase in heavy drinking (4 or more drinks a day) for women.

5. Rise of telehealth 

Say good-bye to reading US Weekly in the waiting room for an hour only to be seen by a doctor for 5 minutes. The number of U.S. consumers using telehealth rose from11% in 2019 to 46% this year.

With four states easing restrictions on marijuana and Oregon passing measures to legalize psilocybin and decriminalize possession of small amounts of hard drugs, there will be a greater awareness and acceptance of other mood enhancers.

With “hygiene theater” at an all-time high, there will be an emerging marketplace for no-touch wearables and technology to keep us germ-free. Hand sanitizer is so 2020.

Clean beauty might still be having its hey day but in 2021, consumers will reconsider new definitions of what natural means. Beauty forecasters see “a best-of-both-worlds blend of nature and technology taking natural ingredients, like plant or marine extracts as a starting point, then reproducing them in a lab.

We will return to the simple art of making our own Instagram-worthy face masks or exfoliating scrubs from pantry staples with the assistance of DIY tools and products. Lets see if there will be any good solutions for the at-home hair cut!

No doubt about it- we have been on high alert for one reason or another this past year and it has taken its toll.
