What are the best Christmas movies right now for 2020?

1. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey

Most Christmas movies emerge only to fade lovingly into the ether the following spring. But not Jingle Jangle. This Netflix original is the rare holiday film that exceeds all the others, and that has already cemented its place in the Christmas canon for decades to come. Why? Well, for starters, it checks every box on our Christmas wish list.

There’s a delightful child protagonist, a family reunion, and a plot point that revolves around “the square root of possible” – not to mention a pair of dueling toyshops. It’s sugar-sweet, it’s sincere – it’s everything we want out of a Christmas movie. And it’s also really, really great. With an incredible cast, including Forest Whitaker and Keegan-Michael Key, and a catchy soundtrack (did we mention it’s a musical?), this one wins Christmas.

2. Holidate

What is it about the holidays that makes us want to find true love? We can’t say for sure, but we know this time of year it’s on everybody’s minds. So it should come as no surprise that many – if not most – of the movies on this list are holiday romances.

And If you’re wondering what a ‘holidate’ is, it’s exactly what it sounds like: two people who agree to be each other’s plus-ones to holiday events, only to fall for each other along the way. If that doesn’t sound like the dream holiday story, we don’t know what does.

3. Happiest Season

You’ve probably heard of Happiest Season, the queer Hulu holiday film whose discourse swept the Internet. But in case you missed it, here is the premise: Abby (Kristen Stewart) goes home with her girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) for the holidays, only to discover that Harper has yet to come out to her parents.

With a cast that includes Mary Steenburgen, Victor Garber, Dan Levy, and Aubrey Plaza, this is definitely one of the most buzzed-about Christmas films of the year.

4. Last Christmas

Last Christmas did indeed come out last Christmas, but if you haven’t checked it out, it’s a great one to add to your lineup this year. A discontented young woman (Emilia Clarke) is inspired by her encounters with a handsome stranger (Henry Golding) to change her life.
