Which Healthy Meals are the Best Now for Home Delivery?

As we begin a new year, lots of us are resolving to eat healthier and pay more attention to our daily nutrition and overall wellness and self-care. Whether our motivation is boosting immunity in the face of flu season and COVID-19; losing the holiday weight; or just feeling more energetic, now is the time to consider a convenient way to ensure that there’s always a healthy meal at home. Our ace correspondent Lindsey Graham is sharing the top brands offering subscription plans for home delivery of  healthy meals, including Freshly, Splendid Spoon and Daily Harvest. Some of these meals are fresh and some frozen, but none require actual cooking. So if Blue Apron is too much work for you (and it is for us!), here are some realistic and delicious options to keep you from ordering another couple dozen pizza deliveries for dinner in the new year.

healthy meals delivered right to your door

The world of eating at home has become a lot more complicated and interesting in 2020. Thanks to COVID-19, many of us who regularly dined out have had to devise new ways to get dinner on the table for ourselves and our family members.

Of course, cooking an actual meal is one option. Duh. But let us just say that for some people (that would be us), the idea of doing that three times a day for weeks on end is just not happening.

So, there’s food delivery, right? Pizza, burgers, even four-course gourmet meals can be had within a reasonable number of minutes thanks to Doordash, Grub Hub, Uber Eats and the like. The problem? It is way too easy to lapse into unhealthy eating when really good French fries are that easy to procure.

Which Healthy Meals are the Best Now for Home Delivery?

But despair not, dear reader. There’s a Third Way. We’ve discovered a surprisingly broad array of home meal delivery subscription plans that provide healthy, tasty meals with good nutritional balance and reasonable calorie counts that are delivered straight to your door.

Most arrive once a week. Some are frozen, others are “fresh” (but must be immediately refrigerated).  The cost is generally less than a restaurant meal, and the flavor is on par with some of our favorite local eateries.

These are not “diet” meal plans, like Jenny Craig. The portion sizes are generally what you’d find in a restaurant take-out situation, and there are no exhortations to count points or anything else.

Best of all? No dietary guilt, no meal prep stress – and no dishes to wash afterward! The Trifecta! If that’s not luxury, what is?

Consider these options the answer to the question: would I eat healthier if it were a lot easier to do? Um, yeah. You would. Here’s how to make that happen.

1. Freshly

Freshly’s menu includes over 30 meals, all of which are chef-prepared, all-natural and gluten free. As a result, you can expect pastas made of cauliflower or zucchini, with a flavor and texture you may need to grow used to. And lots of “card swaps” and higher protein content than the typical take-out or frozen meal.

Having said that, Freshly’s food is very high quality and has generally excellent texture and flavor overall. There are always at least 2 new menu items a week, so boredom is never an issue. Quite the contrary – our biggest beef is that every time we find a dish we love, they seem to change it out for something new! Nestle bought the company earlier this year, so it will be interesting to see how it evolves under corporate ownership.

Order size: Four to twelve meals per week.

Pricing: Four for $11.49/meal; six for $9.49/meal; ten for $8.99/meal; and 12 for $8.49/meal. Subscription is free, and you can skip weeks or cancel at any time.

Delivery schedule: Choose your preferred day of delivery and your meals will arrive toward the end of that same day every week.

Packaging and preparation: When the food arrives from Freshly, it is completely cooked. Meals will last for a month if kept in the freezer. Otherwise, each package has a “use by” date if you decide to store them in the refrigerator (you’ll have less than a week to safely consume them). When you are ready to eat, you just toss the meal in the microwave for three minutes.

2. Splendid Spoon

We learned about Splendid Spoon via word of mouth from a friend – and we are really glad we did! The brand offers plant-based smoothies, soups, and grain bowls that are ready to eat and require no meal preparation time (other than a quick trip through the microwave for the soups and bowls).

The Splendid Spoon menu is geared toward breakfast and lunch, and all meals are packaged “to go” so that you can easily bring them to the office or even on a plane (assuming we’ll be able to do those things again someday). We should note that although the soups and grain bowls are positioned for lunch, we frequently have them for dinner, as well, and they’re very satisfying as a full meal.

Because all of their products are plant-based and gluten free, Splendid Spoon is a great choice for vegetarians. The current menu offers 16 smoothie flavors, 31 soup and grain bowl options, and 6 new noodle options.

In addition, Splendid Spoon offers light soups that they refer to as “Reset Soups.” The 5 different light soup flavors are to be consumed all on one day, with no other food intake, with the goal of cleaning out the body and digestive system. January 1, anyone?

3. Daily Harvest

Compared to the first two meal delivery subscription plans on our list, Daily Harvest requires just a bit more work in terms of meal preparation. The brand describes its approach as “one-step prep.” Meaning they send all the right ingredients for a smoothie, but you have to power up the blender when you’re ready to consume it.

Daily Harvest offers a very extensive menu of options: smoothies, harvest bowls, oat bowls, chia bowls, flatbreads, soups, lattes, and ice cream. And even mini cookie-like desserts called “bites.”

All menu items are gluten free, dairy free and plant-based.
