The month of January will take us outdoors for a number of traditional winter happenings.  There’s Aspen’s annual “toast to winter” known as Wintersköl and  the opening of a brand new ski-in/ski-out Higashiyama Niseko Village from Ritz-Carlton that’s just perfect for well heeled snow bunnies.  And who doesn’t love the annual New Year’s Day NHL Winter Classic?

3. tosca at the royal opera, London

Art and culture are not totally absent from the luxury calendar in January 2021. In one of the few scheduled live stage performances, Anna Netrebko returns to the Covent Garden stage, sharing the role of Tosca with Saioa Hernández and Malin Byström in Puccini’s great opera of passion and politics – Jan 13 – Mar 13

The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC is currently accepting submissions for a new virtual exhibition titled RECLAMATION: Recipes, Remedies, and Rituals that will bridge ingredients and cultural experiences – Jan 18 – Dec 31

5. paris haute couture shows

The Paris Haute Couture shows return for another virtual season.  In addition to the Chambre Syndicale’s official members, like Chanel, Dior, and Maison Margiela and its correspondent members including Valentino and Iris Van Herpen, the Parisian calendar will welcome Alber Elbaz’s AZ Factory, Charles de Vilmorin and Sterling Ruby – Jan 25 – 28

6. the sundance film festival

This year’s Sundance Film Festival will feature a smaller, more focused lineup – down to 72 feature films from last year’s 128. The virtual program will include films from  29 countries and 38 first features. This will include debuts from Rebecca Hall (“Passing”), Robin Wright (“Land”), Jerrod Carmichael (“On the Count of Three”) and Ahmir Thompson, aka Questlove of the Roots (“Summer of Soul”) – Jan 28 – Feb 3

7. the outsider art fair, New York

The Outsider Art Fair in New York will take place virtually, as well as in person at select venues across NYC.  The annual show is the leading art fair for outsider, self-taught and folk art – Jan 28 – Feb 7
