Thanks to an unprecedented amount of uncertainty, too much time indoors and other stressful scenarios, meditation was needed more than ever before.  In fact, according to data from FitBit, between March and September last year practice of meditation increased an astonishing 2,900% globally versus the previous year.

We recently spoke to Vanessa Dunleavy, a meditation leader based in Miami about the increased interest in introspection.  Dunleavy believes the attraction correlates with the unease people experienced with having to slow down their day-to-day lives as a result of the pandemic lockdowns.  “Without busy schedules keeping people running back and forth, people were really forced to sit still in their discomfort,” Dunleavy told us.  And the solution to that?  “Training one’s mind to navigate stress through breathing and mindfulness.”

According to Dunleavy, one of the best ways to begin your meditation journey is to establish a routine, get comfortable with the practice and recognize there is no “right way” to meditate.  Be it a daily walk outdoors, listening to a stress reducing app or partaking in a guided session – it all counts as mediation.  And for newbies, it can be as simple as committing to ten deep breaths every morning, because, according to Dunleavy, even just a few daily minutes of training your mind can make a huge difference in your overall well being.

That being said, creating a physical space for yourself to meditate can also be important.  “Anything that holds a space for your practice or your intention, can be very powerful.  Not to mention it serves as a constant reminder for you to stay consistent in your practice,” says Dunleavy.  And for those living in small spaces, fret not, because by no means do you need a whole room.  “A dedicated space can be as simple as a chair, a cushion, a mat, a scent, a cup of tea or even a favorite song.”
