Only not everything is as we left it in March 2020. The Covid pandemic upended the retail industry, putting more than 11,500 retailers out of business in the US between 2020 and 2021 according to a study by Coresight Research, including more than 3,000 clothing, footwear, and accessories stores.  Among them? Favorites like Bird Brooklyn, Opening Ceremony, Need Supply, Totokaelo and even Neiman Marcus in Hudson Yards. Which leaves us wondering, now that it finally feels safe to leave our homes, where can we go to shop?

1. sandy liang, new york city

New York designer Sandy Liang recently opened her first physical store on New York’s Lower East Side, where her family has resided since the ’70s (her father owns the famous Congee Village). Swirly metal rods designed by Almost Studio, which also produced Liang’s spring-summer-2020 runway set, display her quirky designs and divide up the space. Among our top picks are the open backed Goose Dress in Gingham ($695) and the Delancey Hair Clip ($58) that pay homage to her hometown.

Despite having her initial opening delayed due to Coronavirus restrictions, Telsha Anderson’s new concept store t.a. has made a name for itself as the place to find up-and-coming brands like Ellery, PRISCAVera, William Okpo, Ottolinger, Barragan and more. It is located in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District.

The boutique’s eclectic mix of garments and accessories present a “renewed outlook towards luxury living.” In addition to apparel and accessories, a curated selection of magazines and lifestyle items are also available. We’re coveting these half checkered, half abstract Christopher John Rogers Trousers ($985) and these Completed Works Metropolitan Earrings ($375) for our first official night out in New York City.

4. the onitsuka, new york city

Onitsuka Tiger is one of Japan’s oldest footwear companies, but there’s more to it than the iconic striped sneakers. The Onitsuka is a hybrid crossover between upscale dress shoes and the company’s signature athletic shoes – perfect for easing back into your office work wardrobe when the time comes.

The brand’s new Soho store is entirely dedicated to this luxury line.  The shop was designed in collaboration with Bruce Mau Design. It also features a commissioned piece by graffiti artist John “Crash” Matos thanks in part to the non-profit LISA Project NYC.

5. rachel comey, new york city

After the closure of the Brooklyn based Bird, many Brooklynites wondered where they would score their Rachel Comey locally going forward.

Fortunately for them, the designer decided to open a temporary shop in the former Bird Cobble Hill space showcasing her artful custom textiles like the Willow Top ($325), modern silhouettes and sought-after footwear – we’ve got our eyes on the Tucker Sandal ($595).

6. tase gallery, los angeles

Eco fashion meets art at Tase Gallery, a hybrid retail-gallery space opened by Jessie Andrews on LA’s Melrose Avenue. Tase Gallery stocks all four of Andrews successful direct-to-consumer businesses, Bagatiba jewelry, Basic Swim, Jeu Illimite ready-to-wear and Petiue skin care, but this new venture is not your average brick and mortar. It focuses on immersive interactions, storytelling and art exhibitions in addition to retail.  Works by a female ceramicist, photographer and painter were on view for Women’s History month.  An installation by New York vintage furnishings brand Claude Home and L.A.-based artist Gordon Winarick are on display in April.

When it comes to exciting new places in which to splurge on clothes, think Browns. The new Browns Fashion’s Brook Street emporium is definitely worth a visit. Set in a four-story London townhouse, Browns Brook Street features an accessories floor, a womenswear floor and one for men’s. There’s also an area for VIP customers called The Club. Which has a beauty bar, tattoo parlor, kitchen and several private personal shopping rooms.  If that wasn’t enough, the ground floor is home to the zero-waste restaurant Native. 8. annie’s ibiza, london

Ready to jump right into some “extra” post pandemic dressing?  If you’re London based, head to Annie’s Ibiza on Carnaby Street. The new store is the second outpost from Ibiza shopkeeper and fashion darling Annie Doble, who curates some of the best in one of a kind party ready clothes available like this hot pink Sequined Mini Dresses (£895) from Christian Cowan and this Jack Irving Sequined Catsuit (£650). It’s no wonder the store has fast become a best-kept secret of the fashion set. Including the likes of Rita Ora and Kate Moss. They have been seen perusing the shelves.
