1. San Jose Municipal Rose Gardens

This historic landmark is home to 3,500 plantings of roses – yes, you read that right – spread over five and a half acres. With more than 189 varieties, one visit gives you a chance to experience roses in all their assorted glory – hybrid tea roses, floribundas, grandifloras, polyanthas, and many more. Though the garden says that May is their favorite time for a visit, their gates are open from April to November, giving you many more months to plan your trip. You won’t regret it.

2. Lewis Botanical Gardens

Virginia’s Lewis Botanical Gardens are considered some of the most beautiful in the world, and for good reason. Their 50 acres are simply waiting to be explored, with a set of linked pathways to take you from garden to garden. You might start your day on the Cherry Tree Walk, then head to the Luck Garden or Healing Garden. The world is yours. And make sure to stay up-to-date on the Gardens’ events and exhibitions, such as their reading with River City Poets on July 25th.

3. Missouri Botanical Gardens

Missouri Botanical Gardens offers in-person and virtual access to their gorgeous space, as well as a full calendar of events. Before you arrive, you may want to go through the list of their most notable plants – helpful, since the Gardens are home to more than 51,000 different stems.  You’ll definitely want to spend some time with the Lotus, Water Lilies, and Daylilies. They will be in beautiful bloom this summer.

4. Longwood Gardens

Pennsylvania’s Longwood Gardens are always evolving, but one thing that hasn’t changed is their spectacular 1,000 acres. There are more gardens than we can possibly list, but you can always check to see what’s in bloom, which is updated every single week. You can also catch regular music performances and events – enough to keep you occupied all year long!  This season, you don’t want to miss the Festival of Fountains, where the Garden will illuminate their many fountains with bright colors and offer a summer’s worth of musical accompaniment.

5. Columbus Park of Roses

In Columbus, Ohio you will find one of the largest public rose gardens in the US. They pride themselves on their 12,000 different rose specimens, which are planted over 13 acres, and separated into a variety of gardens. You can split your time between the Heritage Garden, the Formal Rose Garden, and the Backyard Garden. It will help you to see these flower favorites in a whole new light.

6. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

If you’re interested in the experience of a living museum model, you may want to plan a trip to Florida.  Sarasota’s Marie Selby Botanical Gardens marry nature and art, featuring the work of renowned masters throughout their stunning botanical display. This work is often borrowed from the world’s leading art institutions, and its presence in the garden enhances the visitors’ experiences. We can’t wait to check out the current exhibit, We Dream A World: African American Landscape Painters of Mid-Century Florida, featuring work from The Highwaymen. Of course, you can also stop by the Gardens’ many permanent features, such as the Fern Garden, the Butterfly Garden, and the Koi Pond – all of which come with a bayfront view.  And you won’t want to miss the annual Orchid Show, coming up in fall 2021.

7. Atlanta Botanical Gardens

Visit anytime between now and October to catch the brilliant exhibit, Supernatural: Aerial Art in Motion, Glass Art in Bloom. A “skynet” called “dream flora”, courtesy of artist Patrick Shearn, flies over the gardens, while glass flowers from artist Jason Gamrath have been scattered among the formal gardens. For the perfect dose of whimsy, visit Atlanta’s gorgeous 30 acres before the exhibition’s end.

8. New York Botanical Gardens

We already told you all about this summer’s Kusama: Cosmic Nature exhibit so you know that the New York Botanical Gardens are one of our favorite spots. Considered one of the best Botanical Gardens in the US, this is perhaps one of the best places to escape in New York for a little peace and quiet – and beauty. In addition to the breathtaking Kusama exhibit, NYBG’s permanent collection is a great staple of any summer excursion.

9. Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

Give yourself a full day for the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, so that you have enough time to enjoy at least some of their 300 acres.  This is a particularly wonderful destination if you’re traveling with kids, as the Children’s Garden is a feat of both nature and nostalgia. Spread across two acres, the larger Garden is comprised of many smaller units – each one based on a beloved children’s book. Little ones might also enjoy the hands-on experience of the Fairy House Village, which provides its visitors with the materials they need to build fairy dwellings. And adults, don’t worry – there’s plenty for you too. Make sure to stop by the Butterfly House, the Dahlia Garden, and the Meditation Garden for some much-needed tranquility.

10. Desert Botanical Garden

Phoenix, Arizona’s  Desert Botanical Garden is here to shatter all your preconceptions of what the desert looks like. With over 140 acres, and 50,000 plants, their botanical display is among the highest regarded in the US. Simply follow along one of their many Sonoran Desert nature paths, and you’ll find yourself up-close-and-personal with some of the area’s most exquisite plants. For a unique experience, plan to attend one of the summer’s flashlight nights – a self-guided (and lit) journey through the Garden’s many splendors.
