And we, at least, are excited and slightly giddy about both the return of NYFW and the off-cycle All-American Met Gala that will cap it off. The big fete will be hosted by a starry array of celebrities, as always. So, what should close followers of fashion expect during NYFW? Set for September 8-12, 2021, the jam-packed week of physical shows and events will feature a diverse mix of 91 establishment and indie names. In addition to its other goals, NYFW 2021 is meant to help mark the official “reopening” of New York City itself.

But what will be the same, and what will be different? What are the likely headlines coming out of this collective roar of “I Love New York?” Here’s what you need to know. The predictions, trends to watch, and what to expect at this fall’s New York Fashion Week (NYFW) 2021.

1. First up? Ulla Johnson.

The week will kick off with a dreamy Ulla Johnson runway parade, followed by shows from the likes of Rodarte, Gabriela Hearst, Prabal Gurung, Oscar de la Renta and Sergio Hudson (who famously dressed Michelle Obama for this year’s Presidential Inauguration).

Also on the schedule for New York Fashion Week 2021 are Maryam Nassir Zadeh, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Proenza Schouler, Coach, Michael Kors, and Brandon Maxwell. And Zero Maria Cornejo, Markarian, Khaite, Staud, Jason Wu, Kevan Hall, Victor Glemaud and Rebecca Minkoff.

2. Grand finale? Tom Ford.

Closing out the event will be CFDA chairman Tom Ford, making his highly-anticipated return to the Big Apple runway.

3. the prodigals return: Thom Browne and Altuzarra are back from Paris.

Beyond the excitement and significance of a return to in-person runway shows, the upcoming season also marks a NYFW comeback for Thom Browne and Altuzarra. Both began showing in Paris four years ago and now both have returned home.

4. Pyer Moss returns from hiatus.

Pyer Moss, one of the buzziest brands in fashion, will also participate in New York Fashion Week this fall 2021, ending a two-year runway hiatus.

5. Even Telfar is in on this!

Telfar, the iconoclastic label headed by the designer Telfar Clemens and the artistic director Babak Radboy. Though its last two live presentations were in Florence and Paris, the fiercely independent company never been known for hosting traditional runway shows. This NYFW is no exception. The word is that the brand will do something iconoclastic. Something to do with “television.”

6. Anniversary celebrations for Comey and Herrera.

This New York Fashion Week 2021 will also see special anniversary collections for Rachel Comey and Carolina Herrera.

7. Visitors from across the Pond: Scott and Dundas.

Adding some international flair to the schedule will be Moschino’s Jeremy Scott and Peter Dundas, who are trading their usual Milan and Paris shows for slots at this year’s event.

8. Oh, and there’s a gala at the Met . . .

Capping off the festivities will be the Met Gala on September 13, 2021, celebrating the Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary. Usually held the first Monday in May, the Met Gala is the primary fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. This year’s theme is homegrown: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.

Adding to the excitement, this year’s gala guest hosts are Naomi Osaka, Amanda Gorman, Billie Eilish and Timothée Chalamet. Anna Wintour and Tom Ford are honorary chairs.

Timothée Chalamet is hosting the 2021 Met Gala.

The exhibit will delve into the modern vocabulary of American fashion, opening September 18th.

9. Who’ll win the red carpet at the gala? Our money’s on Rihanna.

Hosts aside, there’s no word on the event’s guest list just yet, though with individual tickets going for $30,000 and tables going for $275,000, it’s predicted that JLo, Lupita Nyong’o, and Rihanna will be attending guests.

10. No vaxx, no party.

Despite some of the unknowns – such as the final guest lists and what the spring/summer 2022 collections will actually look like – at both NYFW and the Met Gala, at least one thing is certain. All attendees will be required to provide proof of full vaccination and will be required to wear a mask indoors except when eating, drinking or walking the runway.
