10 Chic Cafés and Restaurants Created Just for Pet Parents and Dogs

best chic cafes and restaurants in New York, DC and other cities around the world to visit right now that are designed just for the enjoyment of dogs and their pet parents

You may have read about the cat cafés that originated in Japan. Where people who don’t have a feline friend can pay a cover charge, have a snack and something to drink, and watch and perhaps even have some playtime with a new furry friend. But what about those who want to share a nice meal out of the house with their darling dog? Fear not – it’s not just the cat parents who get to have a night out with their little fluffy friends. Our correspondent Abbie Martin Greenbaum has uncovered 10 of the best chic cafes and restaurants in New York, DC and other cities around the world to visit right now that are designed just for the enjoyment of dogs and their pet parents (and friends).

Where are the 10 best cafés and restaurants for dogs and pet parents to enjoy?

In the year 2021, the term “pet café” can refer to a wide range of establishments. If you’re talking about a cat (or a sheep, or a penguin), then it usually means a place where you pay to play with animals who are not your own (self-explanatory, in the case of the penguin).

However, in the case of our favorite tail-wagging best friend, the phrase “pet café” takes on a slightly different meaning. These are cafes… for your pets. Specifically, for your dogs. After all, dogs like to go on walks. So why not walk them to an eatery that’s designed just for them?

The ten spots below are exciting new cafes (and bars, restaurants, and food trucks) that are dog-friendly, or in some cases, dog-first. But don’t worry, there’s plenty for humans to enjoy too – as if your puppy’s happy face isn’t enough.

10 best cafés and restaurants for pet parents, dogs and their friends

1. Boris and Horton

Open since 2018, Boris and Horton is a little more senior than some of the other spots on this list. But they were New York’s first dog-friendly café, and they’re still one of the best places in the city to visit with a pup. Designed as a community space for humans and animals alike, this is a place you can go whether you’re a dog, dog owner, or dog-lover.

While the pets play unleashed inside, their people can sip delicious coffee and dig into Boris and Horton’s yummy menu. There’s also a regular calendar of dog-welcome events for anyone who enjoys trivia, burlesque, pilates, or just about anything else you can think of.

2. Woofbowl

If you’ve been on the Internet lately, chances are you’ve heard of Woofbowl.  This food truck is the answer to all your prayers – that is, if you’ve been praying for a doggie food truck that serves hamburgers, fries, and non-alcoholic beer. If you live in New York or New Jersey, you’re in luck, because this incredible new spot is now in your neighborhood.

Simply check the truck schedule. Their menu of five-star dog food is cooked entirely from scratch, and we know that your dog can taste the difference. If you’ve ever wanted to watch your dog drink a (totally dog-safe) beer, now is your chance.

3. Le Doggie Cool

What would a café for dogs be like if it existed in Williamsburg? Well, Le Doggie Cool is, in fact, located in the trendy Brooklyn neighborhood, and it’s probably pretty close to what you pictured. And we’re so happy to have them.

This new doggie paradise offers daycare, boarding, and spa treatments (for the dog – sorry), as well as a human-and-dog-friendly café.  Also, while you’re there, you’ll probably want to pick up one of their artisanal leashes.

4. Little L’s Pet Bakery

We can’t resist adding one more New York spot. This Brooklyn pet bakery opened in the middle of the pandemic, and they are absolutely going to be your dog’s favorite place to go for a treat.

Their doggie brittle is all-meat, making it a safe, healthy, and delicious choice for your four-legged friend. And they even do doggie cakes to celebrate your buddy’s gotcha day. You definitely want to plan a visit.

5. Pucci Cafe

Although you can already shop the boutique’s adorable collars, leashes, and accessories, you’re going to have to wait until November 2021 to visit this Texas dog café.

But with the promise espresso in the mornings and champagne at night, and a stunning lake-side view, Pucci Café sounds like it’s going to be worth the wait. In the meantime, we’ll browse their too-cute puppy apparel and count the days.

6. Dandie Dog Cafe

We’re going to take a quick jump across the pond to check out Dandie Dog Café.  Only one year old, and this place has everything.

A luxury dog boutique, a dog wash, dog (and human) yoga, and of course, a café that serves both dog and people food. They’ll even host your dog’s birthday party. Now, how quickly can you get to London?

7. Boozehounds

As the Palm Springs spot says, this is a place “where dogs bring their humans.” Opened in spring of 2021, the idea here is simple: an amazing restaurant, that just so happens to be dog-friendly. After all, is a place really serving the community if it’s leaving out all the dogs? The pets can devour an amazing menu of treats and meat bowls, while the people catch up with friends and eat human food.

And as the cherry on top, the place converts to a coffee-and-coworking spot during the day. This is a perfect solution for all the dogs who developed separation anxiety during the pandemic.

8. Unleashed Bark and Beer

Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Well, when it comes to Craft Hall, you absolutely can. The Philadelphia food hall kicked off Unleashed earlier this year, and we have fallen in love.

Unlashed is a beer-garden-and-dog-park combo, where owners can bond and sip the latest IPA while their dogs enjoy dog-friendly (i.e. non-alcoholic) cocktails on the grass. Make sure to stop by before we lose the warm weather.

9. Brewski’s Barkhaus

DC residents, rejoice. Brewski’s Barkhaus opened in fall of last year, and is the city’s first-ever dog-friendly bar and restaurant. They boast indoor and outdoor dog parks, both of which are totally unleashed. Of course, there is a made-from-scratch menu of delicious food, as well as a full calendar of events.

10. Sam & George Coffee Co

It’s been a long journey for Sam & George. While their initial goal was to become Orlando’s first dog café, COVID caused all their big plans to change.

In the midst of the pandemic, they launched a pop-up, becoming a dog-friendly coffee shop that also hosted adoption events. They’ve been a bright spot for their struggling community, and we can’t wait to see the joy that their permanent brick-and-mortar location inspires. Coming soon.
