10 best new novels and non-fiction books of 2021

1. The Final Revival of Opal & Nev by Dawnie Walton.

best new novels and non-fiction books of 2021

There is much to be said about The Final Revival of Opal & Nev, a book whose innovative structure shines as brightly as its page-turning content. Told as an oral history – from a fictional magazine editor with a personal connection to the main players – Walton’s genius debut tells the tale of a doomed rock duo from the 1970’s.

The book reads like the world’s best and most impossible-to-put-down celebrity profile, while also speaking to the racism of the early 70’s music scene. It’s a gut-punch of a first novel, and you’re going to wish it went on forever.

2. Libertie by Kaitlyn Greenidge.

best new novels and non-fiction books of 2021The eponymous heroine of Libertie is Libertie Sampson, a young Black woman coming of age in Reconstruction-era Brooklyn. Though at first she intends to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a doctor, a rift between them leads her to instead accept a marriage proposal that takes her to Haiti – where life does not turn out the way she expected it would.

It’s difficult to find a book whose protagonist feels as fully realized and alive as Greenidge’s Libertie, and her story is one that will stay with you long after you reach the final page.

best new novels and non-fiction books of 2021

Though it may seem strange that we – and many others, as well – would recommend a book about writing to non-writers, trust on us on this one. This is the kind of craft book that transcends its purpose, and instead becomes a magical key for understanding why and how stories move us.

A Swim in the Pond in the Rain reads almost like a game, with Saunders presenting short stories and then supplying sections of analysis. By the end, you’ll find yourself wanting to take his class – even if you’re not a writer.

Set in an unknown future time, Klara and the Sun tells the story of an “extraordinary” AI named Klara, and the unusual friendship she forms with a fragile young girl. Ishiguro’s work always captivates, while also urging us to look critically at the world around us.
