Why look at a painting on a museum wall when you could dive headfirst into it instead? That’s the idea behind the latest trend in visual art exhibits: the immersive art installation. Spurred on by the success of the Van Gogh immersive experience and the Yayoi Kusama Infinity Rooms, a new wave of these exhibits will soon debut. We’re sharing a curated list of the best new immersive art installations and exhibits coming to New York (NYC) and other places around the world this fall and winter 2022. Mark your calendar! You won’t want to miss these.

immersive art installations are more popular than ever

In the age of social media, video games, and virtual reality, audiences are looking for a way to get even closer to the art they love. They want to collapse the distance between themselves and the canvas; to shrink until they become a drop of paint or a fleck of clay. In other words, they want to be part of the story. They want to participate.

We could spend hours speculating on the reasons behind this burgeoning love for immersive art – is it the impact of the social internet? or a desire to return to the escapist imagination of our childhoods? – but regardless of the why, the love is here, and it’s beginning to leave its mark on the art world.

Across the globe, curators and designers are incorporating immersive elements into their exhibits. And these elements are beginning to change the way that people see art.

If you’re curious to see the results for yourself, here are ten of the best immersive art installations around the world that you can visit this upcoming season.

10 best immersive art installations coming Fall/Winter 2022

1. Gustav Klimt: Gold in Motion

In the inaugural exhibit at Hall Des Lumières, New York’s brand-new permanent digital art center, Gustav Klimt’s most transcendent work transforms into a multi-sensory experience. With the help of a special mapping technology, guests are surrounded by Klimt’s iconic gold canvas, and they’re invited to see “The Kiss” as they never have before. Open now, through December 31st.

2. Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience

After a residency in Washington D.C, National Geographic’s exhibit is finally making its way to New York. Nine multi-sensory galleries bring the ancient world to modern times, illuminating a story that is 3,300 years old. Visitors can travel through a recreation of the Pharaoh’s burial chambers and a simulation of his journey through the afterlife. Open from October 28th through January 1st.

3. Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon

Presented by the Frida Kahlo Corporation, this new exhibit does not attempt to render immersive iterations of the artist’s work – instead, it renders the story of her incredible life. Using photographs, film, music, installations, and digital environments, this exhibit recreates moments from Kahlo’s life, relaying her biography in a way that allows spectators to feel as if they are experiencing it firsthand. Open in multiple cities around the world.

4. Monet’s Garden: The Immersive Experience

Coming this November to New York, an immersive journey through the legendary work of Claude Monet himself. Guests can explore 360-degree versions of his most legendary paintings, and even cross Monet’s famous bridge to enter the world of the image (and float alongside the waterlilies). The multimedia projections will also treat visitors to a tour of the artist’s studio – where they can hopefully begin to gain a deeper understanding of his mind.

5. Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies

A multi-sensory audiovisual celebration of the Black experience, as told by artist Vince Fraser and poet Ursula Rucker. This interactive exhibit allows visitors to walk alongside African royalty, exploring vital questions of identity and power, with the present-tense urgency that immersive technology enables. Go now, because the exhibit is only open at Washington D.C.’s Artechouse until November 13th.

6. One With Eternity: Yayoi Kusama in the Hirshhorn Collection

Of course, when it comes to immersive works of art, Yayoi Kusama is the first name in many people’s minds. And until November 22nd, you can head to Washington D.C’s Hirshhorn museum to view two of her iconic Infinity Mirror Rooms – her first and her most recent – as well as sculptures, photographs, and an early painting.  If you’re someone who has trouble understanding the fuss over immersive art, Kusama’s one-of-a-kind installations will help you see the light.

7. Museum of Make Believe

In Anaheim, California, you will find an entire museum that is devoted to an immersive experience – the immersive experience of make believe. In fact, we would hazard a guess that it’s nostalgia for this very feeling – for the way childhood games of pretend could completely sweep away our minds – that has us seeking out immersive experiences as adults. The museum adds a twist to the consumption of contemporary art, allowing visitors to taste, touch, and become one with its contents.

8. Arts District Brooklyn

Immersive experiences extend beyond art exhibits, of course. In fact, the world is still trying to define exactly what an immersive experience is, and what its limits are. And Arts District Brooklyn is one of the places that’s helping us to build that definition. Think of them as the place to go to Choose Your Own Adventure; and through November 20th, there are three adventures to choose from.  Limitless AI, which uses AI to take a look at the nature of human beings, transforming data into paint, and algorithms into a paintbrush. Flight, which takes the viewer onboard a life-changing airplane ride. And Séance, which transports visitors to a Victorian parlor – a spooky experience, that’s perfect for the month of October. These are true immersive experiences – not quite theater, not quite art installations, but a new form of entertainment altogether.

9. Arcadia Earth

Though it first opened in 2019, Arcadia Earth remains one of the most significant immersive experiences in New York. This is because of its immersive journey that takes the visitor inside planet earth. Often, narrative is the best and most effective way to convey information. Arcadia Earth is the perfect example of this. Their immersive technology allows them to transform our planet into a story, and that story is able to reach the hearts of a much wider audience.

10. Bob Marley One Love Experience

Immersive experiences can work for art, they can work for the environment… they can also work for music. In this new Bob Marley experience, you’ll have the chance to view never-before-seen photographs and memorabilia. You will also experience an immersive journey through the musician’s life and legacy. You can wander through the One Love Forest, visit the Soul Shakedown Studio, and get closer to the icon than ever before. Though the exhibit is soon closing in Toronto, keep an eye on their website to see which city they’ll be heading to next.
