10 winter skincare questions and answers with Luxury Beauty Brand Augustinus Bader

1. Is it truly necessary to change our skincare routines and products as winter arrives? Why can’t we use the same products all year ’round?

Yes, adapting your skincare routine to the season and its changes is essential to ensure your skin is still supported and healthy. The steps can remain the same, but the products and application should change to suit the colder, drier months.

For example, you would still cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate, and protect daily, but might switch out products for richer textures — like swapping The Cleansing Balm for The Cleansing Gel and The Cream for the Rich Cream.

You might also choose to exfoliate more regularly to combat dry, flaky skin or dullness – which are common issues in winter.

2. What are the basic “must-have” products and routines for winter skincare?

Nourishing cleanser, targeted hydration from a serum, a moisturizer that supports the skin barrier, and a suits-all lip balm

3. Does this change at all for people with sensitive skin?

For those with sensitive skin, the final layer is the most important as it protects you from environmental aggressors, (cold, dry air and fluctuating temperatures that come with the changing seasons). Choose a rich moisturizer like The Ultimate Soothing Cream to support, hydrate, and soothe skin throughout the day.

4. If we want to go beyond basic, what’s the next-level set of products and routines in skincare for the winter?

Introducing a face oil (either after moisturizer or mixed in) is an easy add-on for all skin types. Beyond that, a weekly mask, applied overnight or while watching TV, will supercharge your existing routine. For the skincare devotees, monthly facials with a trusted spa/clinic will keep your skin bright and beautiful throughout the colder months.

5. Lots of us ski or snowboard. Any thoughts on how to be out doing snow sports and still be kind to our skin?

Skincare layering can really help lock in moisture while out on the slopes. We recommend layering your favorite mists, serums, and moisturizers in order of thinnest to thickness. And of course, SPF! Factor 50 is essential to protect your face and neck while exposed to the sun. Don’t forget to reapply every few hours.

6. If we have a beach vacation planned for mid-winter, how do you recommend we pack for the warm weather, and what do we do before and after to make the transitions seamless for our skincare routine?

A great skincare routine relies on consistency. If possible, try to keep as many of the products the same to avoid forcing your skin to adapt to a new product at every step.

Try simply switching to lighter textures and reducing the application to suit your humid destination. For example, serum and SPF may be enough in the mornings. In this case, save your moisturizer step for your nighttime routine.

7. Are there any specific tips you can share for women of color? Most of our Dandelion Chandelier staff is BIPOC, and we always like to know if there’s anything specific we should know.

Our approach to skincare looks at skin health on a cellular level, and our products are designed to work with all skin types and tones. This means, our products do not behave differently depending on the skin complexion, but work with each person’s unique skin cells, adapting itself to the skin concerns that need addressing.

While a fairer complexion may be concerned with issues such as rosacea, darker complexions may be concerned with hyperpigmentation. In this case, look for serums with Vitamin C to brighten and combat dullness, or Retinyl Palmitate (a gentler version of Retinol) to address pigmentation or scarring.

8. Skincare for men seems to be growing rapidly. Are there specific tips for men when it comes to winter skincare?

It’s great to see men becoming more interested and invested in skincare. Men’s skin tends to be naturally more oily than women’s, so they may forgo moisturizer in the summer months. However, during winter, daily moisturizer application is essential to maintain the skin’s health and balance. Look for one that has a more mattifying finish if too much glow is a worry. We recommend The Light Cream.

9. What are your hero products for winter skincare?

A cleansing balm to gently cleanse and intensely nourish the skin. A potent face oil that supports the skin barrier can be added into routines to customize existing steps. This may look like adding drops of face oil into your regular moisturizer.

10. What products not your own would you recommend for winter skincare?

SPF – just because it’s no longer hot, doesn’t mean those rays are no longer harmful. This should be the final step in any skincare routine.
