Let’s face it: the idea of fashion during the coronavirus pandemic has been largely irrelevant – and reasonably dull. Like how many different ways are there to style an old tee and a pair of sweatpants? However, the sharp-eyed observers at New York Magazine have spotlighted a quiet fashion trend on the streets of New York that we might all love for the upcoming summer. It’s called “Zizmorcore,” and it was born in the subway. Curious to hear more? Our correspondent Julie Chang Murphy has answers on what the 2021 “Zizmorcore” fashion trend is, and 10 easy looks that are the best to buy now – including apparel and accessories – if you choose to embrace it this summer.

what is “zizmorecore”?

Last month, we read a piece from The Cut’s Stella Bugbee that gave name to a distinct new fashion trend sweeping the city. Forget Normcore or Cottagecore. This season it’s all about Zizmorcore.

For the uninitiated, the Zizmor in Zizmorcore is the last name of the dermatology doctor’s practice whose subway ads and commercials dominated the city in the 80s and 90s. Perplexed? Are we supposed to be wearing apparel decorated with random skin conditions?

As Bugbee wrote, “Zizmorcore is about wearing merch from places that feel truly authentic to New York.” And it’s not the tourist’s image of a glamorous and high fashion New York where we’re all walking around in designer duds having brunch at the latest hot spot. Nor is it as obvious as a Yankees or Mets cap.

Rather, true “Zizmorcore” is hyperlocal – and a bit nostalgic. Think the diner where you and your friends ate greasy fries at 3am after a night out. Or the local gardening coop at your neighborhood park. There’s a comforting recognition of that shared place which, in the age of Corona, feels more meaningful than ever.
