1. A-O-K.

Thank you, TikTok, for bringing us this upbeat and sing-along worthy summer jam from Tai Verdes. Definitely one of the best new songs of the summer of 2021. Every time we’re feeling the least bit down, all we have to do is listen to this and we feel immensely better. Dare you not to love it.

Doja Cat, girl, we just love you! And we love this duo with SZA. It’s impossible to be in a bad mood if you crank this one up as loud as you can stand it.

3. Lil Bit.

There’s a micro-trend – or is it just a trend? – of a growing number of Black artists recording country songs. You know all about Little Nas X and Old Town Road. But have you heard this new Nelly song, in collaboration with Florida Georgia Line? Which by the way has to be one of the best names for a musical artist ever. This song is a little bit country and a lot of cool. And we say that as committed urbanites. Saddle up and ride.

4. Leave the Door Open.

There is nothing that Bruno Mars sings that we don’t like. Full stop. But this new tune, written in collaboration with Andersen.Paak and performed by them as a group called Silk Sonics (with an assist from Bootsy Collins) is speaking to us very strongly right now. Sure, it’s sweet and sexy and full of longing. But mostly we love it because it captures something ineffable about the mood of the season. Because what is summer about but leaving yourself open to all options? Like if not now, when?

5. 90s Kids.

This sardonic and hysterically funny new song is an homage to the Millennials. Cheugy or not! Best line of the entire song: “Do you got a Tamagotchi? Like a real Tamagotchi . . . ‘Cause I tamagotchuu, if you tamagotmee . . .

Another excellent pick-me-up tune, this one from Tones and I. It’s a lighthearted song with a serious message about being present, seizing the moment and finding the joy wherever you may be.

8. Shy Away

Twenty One Pilots is back with a catchy summer song that we cannot get out of our heads. So why fight it?

9. Astronaut in the Ocean

Masked Wolf delivers a deep baritone and an irresistible and mesmerizing song about feeling like you’re not where you’re meant to be, and figuring out how to get up and away from it. Like an astronaut who finds himself in the ocean . . . and has to find a way to reach the sky again.

10. We’re Good

Nothing will ever match the infectious danceability of Levitating. But this latest single from Dua Lipa’s album Future Nostalgia is still better than a lot of other stuff people are listening to right now. In fact, we vote for it as one of the best songs of the summer of 2021. And when that summer romance starts to wind down, this is a civilized song to accompany your amicable breakup.
