Autumn has officially arrived, and so have the fall 2019 decorations in the Channel Gardens at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Here’s our photo journey to the new Instagram-ready display that awaits.

Most people think of Christmas when they think about holidays and decorations at Rockefeller Plaza in New York. Of course, the skating rink is a New York icon, as is the tree. But there’s beauty and whimsy to be found there all year round, even in the autumn. As we learned this week during a random stroll.

One of the joys of autumn in New York is the serendipity of stumbling across something new and marvelous during your morning commute. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it feels truly magical.

That’s what happened to us recently when we took a short detour past Rockefeller Center en route to a meeting in midtown and discovered the new fall decorations.

They’re elegant, whimsical, cheerful, and photo-ready. If you’re in town, and you love autumn (as we do), you should stop in for a few moments. It’s a luxury experience that’s fun, free and open to all. And if you visit before October 20, you can also visit Lucy Sparrow’s Deli on 6th, which is also free and also a lot of fun.

The Trees

The trees are hung with deep orange ornaments shaped like gourds. And like real gourds, they come in odd shapes and sizes.

The Statues

The Channel Gardens flower beds and their statues are surrounded by orange pumpkins of varying sizes, creating a charming urban pumpkin patch.

Places to Linger

There are bright orange metal chairs and wooden benches where visitors can sit and watch the world go by. Or pose for selfies. Or both.

Of course, you can also get some work done.

The long communal table about halfway through the gardens is the perfect place to meet friends. Love the way they strung the wicker lamp shades.

You Can Always Shop, too

Of course, the luxury merchants of Rockefeller Plaza would be more than happy if you popped in for a visit while you’re there. Tiffany’s awaits!

Like autumn itself, these won’t last forever. Stop by if you’re so inclined. ‘Cause before you know it, that tree will be in town and this will all be a distant memory.
