1. Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living, the Hammer Museum, L.A.

The sixth edition of the Hammer Museum’s biennial survey of Los Angeles area art and artists promises to be as provocative and enlightening as ever.

2. Henry Taylor: B Side at the Whitney, New York

This retrospective of Henry Taylor’s work was first mounted at the Museum of Contemporary Art in LA, where it earned ecstatic reviews. Now, the fifth floor of the Whitney will be devoted to this exhibit, which demonstrates “how Taylor, born in 1958, became one of this country’s greatest painters.” His depictions of Black life in America are essential viewing.

3. Look Again: European Paintings 1300-1800 at the Met, New York

The largest renovation the Met has ever undertaken will be unveiled this fall. For the first time in 50 years, the galleries holding European paintings have been reconceived and rehung. We’re promised “renewed attention to women artists,” and “the histories of class, gender, race and religion.”

4. Ed Ruscha/Now Then at MoMA, New York

Covering the artist’s career of more than six decades, this comprehensive show includes more than 250 works that span an entire floor of the museum. The Chocolate Room has been recreated and shown for the first time in New York City.

5. The Land Carries our Ancestors: Contemporary Art by Native Americans at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC

Curated by Juane Quick-to-See Smith, (Citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation), this seminal exhibit “brings together works by an intergenerational group of nearly 50 living Native artists practicing across the United States. ”

6. Marina Abramović, Royal Academy, London

Incredibly, this is the first solo show by a woman ever held in the Royal Academy’s main galleries. It covers five decades of the 76-year-old performance artist’s career, key works from her oeuvre will be reperformed by artists trained in her methods. According to Artnet News, this is your chance to experience the joint piece the artist made with Ulay, called Imponderabilia, where visitors will be invited to squeeze through a doorway formed by two naked performers. Another performer will live in the gallery for 12 days to recreate The House with the Ocean View.

7.  Mark Rothko, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris

Rothko hasn’t had a retrospective in France since 1999, so anticipation for this exhibit is high. And the hype seems justified, given the depth of the works on display. For example, the entirety of Tate’s Rothko Toom is among the 115 works included in the show.

8. Goya and Munch: Modern Prophecies at the Munch Museum, Oslo, Norway

While Munch and Goya could never have met, this exhibit illuminates how they seemed to be in conversation with one another. Artnet News notes: “Focusing on the themes of war, society, faith, and superstition, this exhibition reminds us why both artists are still remembered for their boldly fantastical visions and darkly mysterious imaginations.”

9. Sarah Lucas: Happy Gas a the Tate Britain, London

Lucas is renowned for “using ordinary objects in unexpected ways.” In this retrospective at Tate Britain, which includes sculpture, installation and photography, we hear the artist’s voice as we navigate the exhibit. It’s a powerful examination of what it means to be human.

10. Anish Kapoor: Untrue Unreal at Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, Florence

This is a career-spanning show with many of Kapoor’s best-known installations and sculpture, which verge on being optical illusions. The highlight is a large-scale installation in the museum’s Renaissance courtyard.
