a luxury brand for standout table linens is born

June Summerill and Bernadette Bishop launched the luxury brand Summerill & Bishop in 1994. Their aim? To solve an ongoing issue they faced when entertaining at home. Specifically, when it was time to set the table.

Lots of the existing brands of luxury table linens and other tabletop items seemed . . . well . . . a bit impersonal. Perhaps even a bit too serious. And certainly lacking in unusual patterns and fun colors. Their new brand would bring “a sense of personality and intimacy” to the tabletop. Starting with linen tablecloths and napkins in charming, whimsical colors and prints.

Just in time for holiday 2022, the brand launched a new Couture Collection that sets a new bar for the luxury tablescape. The first in a promised series of artisanal luxury tablecloths, the made-to-order mottled multi-color pattern for the London Plane series of “table gowns” is inspired by the trees in the neighborhood surrounding Summerill & Bishop’s Notting Hill store.

260,000 sequins

The grand luxury tablecloths are embellished with 260,000 sequins, which are “embroidered onto pure 100% French linen. The process takes place in Switzerland, on classic Saurer ‘Schiffli’ embroidery machines with special made to measure sequin applications . . .  These machines are custom-made for sequin-cutting, are over fifty years old and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. ”

Wow.

Once created, each custom tablecloth is retouched by hand. The brand says it takes 12 hours for an artisan to retouch a single “table gown.” That’s because of the complex, multi-colored design. The final finishes and hemming are completed by hand in the brand’s studio in London.

three different color options in the “London Plane” collection

So, what does a “table gown” look like, and would it work with your interior design scheme? Happily, there are three colorways within the London Plane series. One has the color palette of a meadow of lavender, pink and yellow flowers.

The second colorway has an air of spring and the seashore. It features hues of turquoise, pink, khaki and white.

Personally, our favorite is the final colorway. Featuring silver, bronze, and pearl tones, it feels like the perfect foundation for a glamorous Thanksgiving or holiday dinner party. It would go extremely well with Champagne!
