New Year’s Eve is fast-approaching – are you ready? From where to go, to what to watch, to what to wear we’ve covered a number of pressing matters related to the big night. Now, though, comes one more possibly perplexing question: what’s the best way to mark the end of one year and the start of the next one on social media? Our roundup of creative ways people are already weighing in on the subject of on how to say goodbye (and perhaps good riddance) to 2023 and welcome the new year 2024 on social media this New Year’s Eve (NYE).

‘Twas the Year of Social Media

Happy New Year! If you’re staying at home this year you may be looking for ways to ring in the new year online.

Here are the ten best ways to virtually celebrate the start of 2024. If you want to end the year smiling, and start the new year on the right foot, here’s how.

Creative ways to Welcome the New Year 2024 (and say goodbye to 2023) on Social Media this NYE

1. Check Out Your Year in Review

Love Spotify wrapped? You’re not alone. It seems the Internet has figured us out – we like to see our data compiled and reported back to us at the end of every year. And now, Instagram and Facebook offer similar features.

On Instagram, you can re-share selected story archives with your followers, and on Facebook, you can flip through the people, places, and things that you posted to the site this year. If you want one last look at 2023 before you wave goodbye, this is your final chance.

2. What’s In and What’s Out?

If you spend any time on social media, you’ve probably seen some of the “in and out” lists people have been making in advance of the new year. What trends are you leaving in 2021, and what trends are you manifesting for 2022?

These lists range in terms of their sincerity, but you can look online to read other people’s, or make one of your own. These can be actual predictions – what do you think is coming back? – or simply your hopes and dreams.

4. Buy a Custom New Year’s Filter

If you want festive photos, but you’re not interested in leaving your house anytime soon – buy one of these sparkly filters on Etsy. You can customize the image with your own name, and add the Geofilter to Snapchat.

If you want to be able to send celebratory photos, but you’re planning to stay covid-safe, this is how you can have the best of both worlds.

5. Play 22 (Taylor’s Version) and Participate in the #ImFeeling22 Challenge

Are you #Feeling22?  One of the biggest moments of the year, of course, was Red (Taylor’s Version). And as Taylor herself took to social media to say, she’s feeling 22 – well, 2022.

If you too want to ring in the new year Swiftie-style, you can join the #ImFeeling2022 Tik Tok Challenge.  You can post a video of yourself with the song, or do as the Swifties do – play the song at exactly 11:59:18 so that when the ball drops, you really will be feeling 2022.

6. Watch the Tik Tok New Year’s Eve Stream

And while we’re on the topic of Tik Tok – if you need some virtual New Year plans, you can always count on Tik Tok. They’re hosting a fabulous New Year’s Eve bash, with musical performances from Charlie Puth, Kali Uchis, and Rico Nasty.

There will also be other surprise appearances throughout the night – and knowing Tik Tok, they’ll be worth sticking around for.

7. Attend the Virtual Ball Drop

Or if Tik Tok isn’t for you, you can also celebrate the night virtually with Time Square’s ball drop. Thanks to Omicron, everyone’s favorite annual tradition is online once again, and you can keep up with the countdown from the safety of your own home.

The full ceremony will be broadcast on the Metaverse, and you can also hop around the different cameras – for instance, the live show, the audience, and the ball itself – on the New Year’s Eve website.

8. Set Up Your 2022 Reading Challenge

We’ve been talking about the end of 2021 – but what about the beginning of 2022? We know resolutions aren’t for everybody, but we also know that you want to start the new year feeling good about what’s to come.

And we can’t think of a better way to do that, than committing to read a certain number of books in the new year. Goodreads will help you catalogue every new read of the year, so you can look back, 365 days from now, and feel proud of past you.

9. Join the Move Yoga Challenge

You may already be a fan of Yoga with Adriene. Adriene’s videos helped many of us get through quarantine, and we’re so grateful for the way she makes yoga so accessible online. Well, if you’re looking for a virtual way to kick off 2022, what better to do than sign up for her 30-day yoga challenge?

You’ll be doing yoga with people from all around the world, which is a great way to stay connected virtually. Goals are always easier to accomplish when you have people cheering you on.

10. Take a Social Media Break

We know, we know. This piece is all about how to celebrate the new year virtually. And social media is a big part of the virtual world! But if you’ve been on Instagram lately, you’ve probably noticed a lot of accounts – both brands, and personal friends – who have said they’re taking a break from the platform until 1/1/2022. And honestly, with everything that’s going on in the world right now, a break sounds like a great idea. We can’t think of a better time to step away from our social media platforms and try to live in the moment. At least until the clock strikes midnight.
