6 essential men’s jackets, coats and luxury Outerwear for spring 2021

Here’s our take on the 6 luxury men’s coats, jackets and outerwear essentials that are perfectly in sync with the key menswear fashion trends in spring 2021. And also wearable enough that you won’t look like you’re trying too hard.

1. Ultimate Luxury

We begin our survey of the key trends and essential looks in men’s outerwear spring 2021 with an over-the-top topper.

For those seeking the ultimate in luxury, look no further than Loro Piana’s New Central Park Bomber Jacket, made out of their famous Vicuña Storm System and a detachable mink fur collar. The vicuña is the smaller cousin to the llama and produces the world’s finest and most expensive wool.

After being on the endangered species list for decades, Loro Piana worked with Peruvian authorities to expand nature preserves and conservation initiatives in an in effort to reintroduce the wool to the commercial world. Current wool supply comes from the selection and then release of wild animals for shearing. The animals are tracked and can only be sheared every 3 to 4 years. This jacket is incredibly soft, light, warm, and naturally water resistant.

2. Classic Trench Coat

You simply can’t go wrong with a Burberry trench coat. Trench coats are particularly fashionable this year, but honestly a Burberry coat is a classic that you will be able to use for a lifetime. These coats are instantly recognizable, well designed, well built, serve a clear function, and honestly, belong in everyone’s wardrobe. Whether you are wearing a suit underneath it, or jeans and a sweater, the coat will elevate any look.

Burberry makes seasonal runway trench coats as well as coats of different materials and lengths. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of their trench coats, but the Westminster Heritage is certainly one of their more classic ones. The Westminster is still hand stitched in England and is made from garbadine, a water-resistant cotton. Remember, an added benefit of trench coats is that they are incredibly easy to accessorize with scarves and even hats!

3. Sleek but Technical

Seeking the benefits of Gore-Tex technology, without the rugged outdoor adventurer look? Then look no further than Veilance. Veilance is the high-end brand of the well-known adventure outfitter Arc’teryx, and one of the best brands of men’s outerwear to know for spring 2021.

They make minimalist modern outwear that will protect you against the elements in an understated, tailored look. The Indisce Blazer is made from the latest 3L Gore-Tex Infinium fabric that is windproof, breathable and highly water resistant. Pair it with Veilance’s Indisce Pants, and you can have yourself a slim tailored looking Gore-Tex suit. The well-designed blazer also has a hidden slide snap mechanism in the lapel that let you flip the collar and protect your upper chest and neck on a particularly blustery day.

Honestly, it would probably be overkill to use a Gore-Tex overcoat over the Indisce Blazer, but of course, Veilance has several options on that front too.

4. The English Country Look

Another classic English outwear brand that you can’t go wrong with is Barbour, a fifth-generation family-owned business known for their waxed-cotton hunting jackets. Fox hunting might not be allowed anymore, but the classic English country gentleman’s look is here to stay. It is hard to quickly summarize the look, but in essence it comes down to creating a look that is simultaneously rugged and adventurous, while also luxurious and classy.

Barbour jackets come in a range of styles, but a good modern take on their classics is the Beaufort. Thornproof waxed cotton, Velcro wind cuffs, and a corduroy collar all help seal out bad weather. A detachable hood and liner help make this jacket even more versatile for fickle weather. And while you might not use the large rear pocket to carry a rabbit or duck that your hunting dog just retrieved for you, you could in theory put your gloves or scarf there!

5. The Poncho from our Neighbors Up North

A Canadian Poncho? Well…yes. Canada Goose might be famous for their incredibly warm down-filled jackets, but they also have been able to find a niche in the hip luxury poncho market. In fact, they are probably the only player in this market!

Chances are the people buying this poncho are not using it to go hike the Appalachian Trail, but believe it or not, many hikers actually swear by ponchos and prefer them over jackets. Ponchos have several benefits over jackets: 1) They are more water resistant, 2) They allow your body to breath/perspire a lot easier (preventing that wet and clammy feeling), and 3) You can place a backpack under the poncho thus also preventing it from getting wet. When you think about, these are actually three great reasons to use it around the city as well!

This poncho comes in 4 different colors, black, navy, red, and neon yellow and, as to be expected for the price, comes with a bunch of features that make this more than a simple throw-over with a hole in it. The fabric is 100% waterproof, windproof, allows for stretch, and is breathable. A relaxed open fit allows for air flow and ventilation, while a rain-proof chest zipper, adjustable hood, and snaps on the side can quickly seal the bad weather out.

Need to use your hands? Then an innovative interior drawcord can help you adjust the “sleeve” (or hem) to a customized length. The poncho is lightweight and stows in its hood, for easy carrying. Frankly, it is also just cool looking.

6. The Technical Rain Jacket to Hit the Trails

It would be remiss of us not suggest a modern technical rain jacket whose sole purpose is to be used for hiking and backcountry activities. So we’re wrapping up our survey of the key trends and essential looks in men’s outerwear spring 2021 with a classic.

Unlike the Field Poncho, the choices in this segment are almost endless, however the Arc’teryx brand consistently gets top marks for their good design and use of innovative technologies. While they make specialized skiing jackets, their Beta AR is their top of the line All-Round (hence AR) jacket.

As to be expected, the Beta AR is waterproof, windproof, and breathable, but it is also extremely lightweight, packable, and durable.  Furthermore, pit zippers in the underarms that help with venting, a dropped back hem, multiple pockets (with sealed zippers), and a microsuede chin guard all make this is a premium rain jacket.

What truly sets this jacket apart though is the unique design of the hood and stand-alone collar. The hood has four different draw chords which allows for extensive adjustability. This fit not only prevents you from having the hood obstruct your view if you look sideways, but also prevents that constant annoying rasping sound of your hair and head rubbing against the hood while walking. As the collar is built separately from the hood, you can also fully zip-up the jacket to keep your neck warm and cozy without having the hood bunch-up and restrict your movements.

essential men’s jackets, coats and luxury Outerwear for spring 2021

That’s our take on the 6 luxury men’s coats, jackets and outerwear essentials that are perfect for being in sync with the key menswear fashion trends in spring 2021.

Spring 2021 is officially here! Not a minute too soon, either.  Dressing in the spring is tricky enough in a normal year.  It can go from being a nice sunny day to a frigid sleety one in an instant. There is no need to wait for proper summer to get outside and smell the flowers, however. You might need more than one outwear item, but hopefully this selection will help cover all your needs.
