Right now, winter feels like a long, dark tunnel, and we are all too aware that we’re going to need something to keep us occupied through these next few months. And at the same time, there’s so much content coming out these days, it can be hard to keep track of what’s appearing where and when, and even harder to know what’s worth watching.

The 10 Best New Shows to Watch on Streaming Winter 2021

1. New Show: WandaVision

2019 feels like a lifetime ago, but one thing we remember all too well is the excitement around Marvel’s blockbuster Endgame. A… lot has happened since then, and after a year without any new movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – the first gap in over a decade – we finally have their next project. And it’s excellent.

WandaVision is a continuation of the love story between Wanda and Vision, two of our favorite characters in the MCU, as well as a brilliant and original take on the old-fashioned sitcom. It’s unlike any content from we’ve seen from Marvel so far, and we think it will appeal to everyone – including those who are newcomers to the genre. And if you love what you see, there are two more MCU shows coming out in the next few months.

2. New Show: Lupin

Omar Sy stars as Assane Diop in the new Netflix series, named for the adventures of well-known gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. After reading a book about Lupin, Diop is inspired to avenge his father’s wrongful death.

With the tools at his disposal – namely, his charisma and mastery of disguise – he sets out to defeat the man responsible. We’re delighted that the magic of the streaming service has made this extremely absorbing French mystery available to international viewers.

3. New Show: Pretend It’s a City

Perhaps it’s cheating to call Pretend It’s a City a television show, when really it’s a documentary, split into seven parts.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, the series consists of interviews between Scorsese and icon Fran Lebowitz, and footage of the two of them walking around New York. It is a visual escape, giving you a window to the city in a way that will make you feel you’re there.

4. New Season: Batwoman

We are very excited for the second season of Batwoman, which is slated to be a reinvention of the DC show.

Javicia Leslie replaces Ruby Rose in the titular role, bringing new life and new stories to Gotham. We loved the first episode, and are enjoying the suspense of a week-by-week rollout for the rest of the season.

5. New Show: Bling Empire

In a strange paradox, there is often nothing more escapist – or, let’s face it, relaxing – than a season of reality TV. And we particularly loved Bling Empire, which has been the talk of the Internet for the last few weeks.

Those who enjoyed Keeping up with the Kardashians will love watching this group of Asian and Asian-American socialites as they enjoy their best and most glamorous lives in Los Angeles. Especially if you’re missing big nights out right now, you can vicariously enjoy them here.

6. New Show: Belle Collective

This new show from Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network is a reality series featuring five of the most successful Black female entrepreneurs in Jackson, Mississippi.

Watch as the Belles manage their friendships, relationships, and careers, and as they put aside their differences to transform Jackson’s mid-twentieth century historic district together. Episodes one and two are available now, and the rest will be released on a weekly rollout.

7.  New Season: Search Party

Everyone’s favorite dark and murderous comedy is back for its fourth season. If you missed the first three seasons, you’re in luck, because now you have something amazing to do next weekend.

When a woman goes missing, a group of her self-involved New Yorker acquaintances find themselves obsessed with the case, but they have no idea how dangerous and out-of-hand their involvement is going to become.

8. New Show: Trickster

This supernatural coming of age series originally aired in Canada this past fall, and we’re excited that the CW has now made it available in the United States. Jared, a teenager in British Columbia, finds his life turned upside down by a sudden spree of magical occurrences.

Incorporating the Indigenous mythology of the Trickster, this show is unlike anything we’ve seen before. And if you enjoy it, make sure to check out the novel by Eden Robinson, Son of a Trickster. New episodes available weekly.

9. New Season: Dickinson

Dickinson flew a little under the radar during its first season, but now that season two is out we are hoping more people climb on board.

The show covers the life of teenage poet Emily Dickinson, who has a lot of trouble fitting in. We love the way the series balances the struggles of Dickinson’s own era with an exciting, modern sensibility.

10. New Show: Firefly Lane

Tully and Kate seem like an unlikely pair – Tully is the most popular girl at school, and Kate is a social outcast. But somehow, the two fit together, creating a once-in-a-lifetime bond that carries the two women to middle-age.

Based on the novel by Kristin Hannah, this new series tells the story of a friendship that spans a lifetime, including its many up’s and down’s.
