And if you pick up that image and move it from a creaky small-town to the streets of New York, you get…. Selena Gomez in “Only Murders in the Building.” If you haven’t seen the Hulu hit, led by Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short, we can’t recommend it enough – it’s the laugh-out-loud murder comedy that we didn’t know we were waiting to escape to.

Everything you need to know about mysterycore, the new fashion trend based on the hit TV series “Only Murders in the Building.”

Gomez, Martin, and Short play residents of the Arconia – based on real-life New York building, The Belnord – who find themselves thrown together when they discover two things: one, that they are all fans of the same true crime podcast, and two, that they were the last three people to see one of their neighbors alive. Before he was murdered.

The show is great in every way, but one of the highlights has to be Gomez’s fantastic wardrobe as the mysterious Mabel. Every outfit seems to scream “autumn in New York” – but with a twist. It’s everything people love about Nora Ephron’s fall looks (and p.s. The Nora Ephron Cinematic Universe and Only Murders  have already gotten a lot of comparisons), with the added element of a little intrigue. You want to stroll around Manhattan and peep the leaves, but you also want to be ready to solve a murder, if one should happen to cross your path. Or, you know, at least look good while listening to your favorite true crime podcast.

We’re going to call it mysterycore. Mysterycore means warm, comfortable, fall-favorite items – but with a pop of color and pizzazz. And a bit of mystery.

Herewith, everything you need to know about mysterycore, the new fashion trend based on the hit TV series “Only Murders in the Building,” and the wardrobe pieces to buy now if you love the look.

10 “Mysterycore” Fashion Pieces to Buy if you Love the trends based on the hit TV series

1. Felice Teddy Zip Bomber Jacket

Mabel’s teddy coats are a pleasing visual trend throughout the show, and they often appear in bursts of bright and beautiful orange. We love this one from Max Mara, which finds the same balance of cozy and eye-catching – after all, mysterycore means that on a dark, stormy day, you’re going to have to be your own source of comfort and light. The bright red also leans into the fall foliage color palette, which is a must for all things mysterycore.

2. Blake Trenchcoat

Another piece of memorable Mabel-outerwear is the belted leather trench coat, which costume designer Dana Covarrubias told Elle was her favorite look of Mabel’s.  With its shine, this one from Lafayette 148 inspires the same reaction – whoever is inside the coat must be a person with a story. And with its soft, comfortable feel, this is a coat that can keep you company through long hours of crime-solving.

3. Mockneck Sweater

We don’t make the rules: fall is the era of the sweater. As soon as the calendar reaches September – or let’s be honest, August – all we want to do is hunker down inside our favorite knit and grab a mug of something warm. And lucky for you, this is also something you can wear through all your autumn mystery-solving, as seen by Mabel on the show.  Everlane’s Cashmere Raglan Mockneck comes in Cider, which seems like the right color for all your future escapades.

4. Black Turtleneck Bodysuit

Mabel’s black turtleneck appears only briefly. Though it is one of the least flashy looks she dons throughout the show, it seems like a key piece for any closet full of mysterycore. After all, if you’re going to play detective – or take a walk through the park, pretending that you are – you’re going to sometimes need to be able to blend in with your surroundings. And when we saw the way Mabel paired her turtleneck with an adorable miniskirt, we were sold. Check out this Turtleneck Bodysuit, which will give you the perfect look.

5. Wool Mini Skirt

And speaking of that particular black turtleneck outfit, we of course wanted to recommend a mini skirt to go with it. And this wool miniskirt from Rebecca Taylor seems to kill (no pun intended) two mysterycore birds with one stone:  as its description says, its classic print is designed with a “romantic feel for Fall.” Mystery or no mystery, this seems like a necessary part of your autumn aesthetic. Grab one before the last leaf falls.

6. Hoop Earrings

While we have our minds on mystery-solving, Elle has solved already one mystery for us. Many of the hoop earrings Mabel wears on the show are courtesy of Jennifer Fisher. And we have decided that these earrings are a key part of mysterycore – because even while you’re out solving mysteries, you never want to stop being a mystery yourself. That’s the whole point. Mysterycore requires a perfect balance between blending in and standing out, and these gorgeous gold hoops will help you find your happy medium.

7. Chelsea Boots

One thing’s for sure – if you’re planning to spend some serious time mystery-solving (or walking around New York), you’re going to need a pair of comfortable, durable shoes. And for such a task, the Chelsea boots are always going to be a first choice. And now that we can suggest this wonderful vegan pair? Even better. Through these on, and there’s no culprit you can’t outrun.

8. Coveralls

These coveralls come in three autumnal colors – black, brick, and olive – and as the description says, they are the one-and-done outfit that you’re never going to want to take off again. But the best part has to be how they can be dressed up or down to fit any situation – which is the exact kind of chameleoning that mysterycore requires.

9. Paperbag Trousers

Mabel’s paper bag pants are another notable item from her wardrobe, and we think they would make a great asset to your forthcoming mysterycore wardrobe. They are all about contrast – cinched waist, baggy bottoms – much like mysteries themselves.

BUY NOW – $393.

10. Oversized Round Sunglasses

Our last entry in this overview of fashion inspired by “Only Murders in the Building” is a key accessory. To hide behind, of course! No matter the season, you’re going to need a way to go incognito – and these oversized, tinted sunglasses would make the perfect disguise.
