luxury vegan clothing brands and cruelty-free fashion are on the rise

November 1st is World Vegan Day. Every year it’s a great reminder that veganism goes way beyond what we eat – it’ a whole lifestyle. It has to do with what products we use, what brands we support, and what we put on our bodies. And as a movement, it’s only growing bigger and stronger.

So, let’s take this opportunity to talk about one of the most fun parts of vegan culture: vegan fashion.

Vegan fashion is definitely having a moment this fall, with vegan debuts at Paris Fashion Week, and with  Vegan Fashion Week’s return to Los Angeles.

But one could argue that this is much more than just a moment, as many of the best-known brands are stepping back from fur and creating looks that are “accidentally vegan.” Many are also looking at vegan fashion through the lens of sustainability – vegan clothes are better for the planet, as well as being cruelty-free.

Vegan fashion is everywhere, and it’s here to stay.  And we’re here for it – we want to feel good about the clothes we wear, and not just because they’re beautiful.

1. The Frayme Mylo by Stella McCartney

This might just be the vegan accessory of summer 2022. Made entirely out of mycelium – otherwise known as mushrooms – this bag from Stella McCartney’s upcoming collection is the first of its kind. It made its debut at Paris Fashion Week, as part of a fungus-themed runway show. Mushroom leather may very well be the material of the future, and we’re so excited about these beautiful bags.  Available in many sizes, styles and colors.

With a laceless forefoot, Demonskin spine, and a vibrant pattern, these are as eye-catching to look at as they are ethical to wear. Available starting on November 1st – World Vegan Day.

One of the stars of Vegan Fashion Week, Vegan Tiger is the first Korean vegan fashion label. Their slogan is “CRUELTY FREE” – meaning all cruelty, not just cruelty towards animals. According to Vegan Fashion Week, their specialty is texture. Founder Yang Yoon-a strives to make products that are as close to their animal counterparts as possible. And who would guess that this colorful coat is made from recycled, eco-friendly, faux fur?

4. Nous Étudions

The other star of Vegan Fashion Week was Argentinian brand Nous Étudions. As they say, “Nous is not only a fashion brand, it is a clear statement of a new generation.” They pride themselves on their eco-friendly and genderless designs, and of course the fact that all of their designs are vegan. They specialize in oversize vegan jackets, like this one. Expect looks like this one to be the way of Gen Z and beyond.

7. Awear

This is a brand that you want to have on your radar. It’s not just that their clothing is vegan, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly, but it also has a story to tell. Each piece is tied to a different endangered animal, and you can find information about that animal written on the clothing label. Their goal is to spread awareness, while also delivering super-soft, comfortable, every-day clothes that you can easily move around in. We love these elephant-print high-waisted joggers.

New York brand Pelush specializes in – as you may have guessed – vegan fur. They’re calling it a “refauxlution,” and their goal is to completely revitalize the faux fur world. Each bespoke item is made with a one-of-a-kind lining, and handmade crochet and jewel appliqués. Here’s an example of their exquisite work – the Eva coat, made with handmade, three-dimensional flowers.

9. Eilish

It isn’t just coats, shoes and handbags that can be vegan – even perfume is making the leap. And this new fragrance from popstar Billie Eilish – who is vegan herself – promises to be 100% cruelty-free. The new fragrance is coming sometime this fall, making it the perfect way to celebrate World Vegan Day – and the holidays, since the singer told Elle that the fragrance has a Christmas-y scent. Sign up now to be the first to hear about its release, and maybe buy this for someone this December.

10. Oatly

Yes, that’s right, Oatly. As in, the milk you’re always asking your barista for. They’ve arrived with “ReRuns” – a line of upcycled vegan denim jackets, designed in a partnership with ten different artists. Of course, denim is naturally vegan, but that’s not the point. The point is to show people what Oatly – a vegan brand – already knows, which is that veganism and sustainability go hand-in-hand. If we want to live in a better world, we need to pay attention to the ethics of what we put on our bodies. And we happen to love this first Limited Edition Drop. This particular jacket was found in Roanoke, Virginia, and was completely transformed by artist Stephanie Santana. All proceeds will go to the Lower Eastside Girls Club.
