As you may have heard, the Pantone Color Institute’s choice for Color of the Year 2022 is . . . Very Peri. Our ace correspondent Julie Chang Murphy is here to show us how to style the new Pantone 2022 Color of the Year with an edit of 10 Very Peri outfits and other luxury buys in fashion, menswear, beauty and home décor.

Very Peri is the new Pantone color of the year 2022

Is it possible to capture the zeitgeist with a color? The trend analysts at Pantone Color Institute have been hard at work choosing just the right one. This year they were influenced by our collective “altered landscape” and the way our “physical and digital lives have merged in new ways.”

The anointed color, Very Peri (PANTONE 17-3938,  if we’re being technical) pulls from the trusted blue color family and adds a dose of intrigue and daring from violet red tones to create a color “that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”

In previous years, the color has been chosen from their extensive archives but this year’s color is completely new. A new era is in need of a new color. As Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Institute said, “There is just no question that gaming influenced the continued usage of Very Peri.” The emphasis on the high-contrast hues found in the metaverse and gaming platforms is undeniable (just do a google image search with metaverse) butt we also see associations with the natural world. Lilac, lavender, and periwinkle are all notable for their calming qualities.

2. quiet luxury

Despite its video game origins, Very Peri can exude a look of quiet luxury when paired with neutrals like cream and earthy beige and browns. As shown in these photos, choosing one oversized piece — a jacket, sweater or wide-legged pants —adds to the relaxed and polished look.

3. pretty pastels

Very Peri is certainly a fun and vibrant color. Lean into the youthful spirit by pairing it unapologetically with pastels like pink, mint green, and baby blue. Keep it in solids or with large scale prints to avoid looking too baby-ish.
