March, April, and May mark the opening of highly anticipated art exhibitions all around the world – and here are ten you won’t want to miss in glittering cities like New York, London and Paris.

Six Black-Indigenous women will have their art featured in this month’s exhibit, spanning across mediums – painting, photography, graphics, poetry and more. Their pieces will be tired together with interviews and scholarly essays, generating a conversation about mixed-race identity, gender, and community.

2. Yves Saint Laurent Aux Musées

Paris, France: Multiple Locations. Open now through May 15th, 2022. 

Yves Saint Laurent has taken over Paris. In celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the designer’s first runway show, six museums – the Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, Pompidou Center, Museum of Modern Art, Picasso Museum and, of course, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum – have put the couturier’s most iconic pieces on display. Each museum’s exhibit has a different theme, focusing on a different angle of the designer’s work. The clothing is also paired with pieces of artwork, in order to highlight the close connection between art and fashion.

3. The Slipstream: Reflection, Resilience and Resistance in the Art of Our Time

Brooklyn, New York: The Brooklyn Museum. Open now through April 10th, 2022.

This exhibit at The Brooklyn Museum holds space for the many emotions – whether they’re grief, fear, anger or isolation – following the events of 2020. Centering artists of color, the exhibit gathers more than sixty pieces that speak to themes of collective power, family, well-being, and other topics that have been on all our minds these past few years. Art can be such a powerful tool for processing collective trauma, and we hope everyone gets a chance to see this year-long exhibit before it comes to an end.

4. Charles Ray: Figure Ground

New York, New York: The Met Fifth Avenue. Open now through June 5th, 2022.

Though Ray has been recognized for his work in many mediums – including photography and performance – it is his sculptures that have made him one of the most notable artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This spring, viewers will be able to enjoy pieces from across his career, as well as his photographs. Pay special attention to the way the artwork is arranged – the space will play a key role in this exhibit, helping to connect the viewer to what they see.

5. Iké Udé: Nollywood Portraits

Washington, DC: The National Museum of African Art. Open now through February, 2023.

In this new celebration of Nollywood, the multimedia artist Iké Udé turns his lens on the superstars behind Nigeria’s $3 billion dollar film industry. Titled “A Radical Beauty,” Udé’s portraits are bright, colorful, and detailed, and strive to capture the stunning power – and, of course, beauty – of his subjects.

6. Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear

London, England: The Victoria and Albert Museum. Open March 19th, 2022.

You may have already noticed that this is a major moment for men’s fashion – well, so did The V&A. This exciting new exhibit looks at menswear through the ages, exploring the way that designers, tailors, and artists – as well as their clients – have helped to construct and define masculinity as we know it. Highlights will include pieces from Craig Green, from Gucci, and from Wales Bonner, as well as so many more. We can’t imagine a more interesting entrance point to the current conversation around gender.

7. What Is Left Unspoken, Love?

Atlanta, Georgia: High Museum. Open March 25th, 2022 through August 14th, 2022.

What is love? Using more than seventy artworks from 1987 to 2021, High Museum attempts to answer this question. These paintings, sculptures, photos, and videos will probe the nature of love, while acknowledging that the subject is elusive by definition. There are thirty-five international artists in the exhibition, including Carrie Mae Weems, Rina Banerjee, Tomashi Jackson, Ebony G. Patterson, and many others.

8. Whitney Biennial 2022: Quiet As It’s Kept

New York, New York: The Whitney Museum. Open April 6th through September 5th, 2022.

The Whitney Museum is famous for their Biennials, which are the longest-running survey of American art in the country. Occurring every two years, they display work across mediums, representing an enormous number of artists. The museum calls it “a constellation art and ideas of our time.” The 2022 survey will be the museum’s 80th.

9. Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure

New York, New York: Starrett Lehigh. Opening April 9th, 2022.

Presented by the family of Jean-Michel Basquiat, this exhibit will showcase 200 never-and-rarely-before-seen paintings and drawings. With the help of multimedia presentations and personal artifacts, viewers will begin to understand a more complete story of the iconic artist, and the way in which his work is forever intertwined with his personal life, his influences, and the time in which he lived.

10. Cezanne

Chicago, Illinois: The Art Institute of Chicago. May 15th – September 5th, 2022.

This new retrospective poses two questions: how did the impressionist painter create his unforgettable works, and why have they withstood the test of time? Planned with the Tate Modern (where it will open in October), this marks the first US retrospective of Cezanne’s work in more than twenty-five years. It will include ninety oil paintings, forty watercolors and drawings, and two complete sketchbooks – a massive range of material, indicating Cezanne’s singularity as an artist.
