The arrival of fall always brings a lot of conversation about new fashion trends. Some of them are gorgeous but highly impractical. Then there’s athleisure, which remains on trend for fall and winter 2021. It’s comfortable, functional and when styled properly, eye-catching as well. Our correspondent Meredith Lepore has curated a list of the chic athleisure and activewear inspired fashion trends for women that you need to know to show up in style in fall 2021.

The top athleisure trends for women for Fall 2021

Though it is always sad to see summer come to an end, one thing that does get everyone excited is fall fashion. Even if that fashion is athleisure. After all, the global athleisure market size is anticipated to reach USD $549.41 billion by 2028. Activewear buyers are now spending 11% more per purchase compared to non-activewear buyers, according to data from market research group NPD.

And after a year of not having to go out in public athleisure took on a whole new level and is now part of office wear or even hybrid office wear. Lululemon CEO Calvin McDonald said of the brand which posted second-quarter earnings that surpassed Wall Street’s expectations, “We know that the pandemic drove forward [and] accelerated some of the guest behaviors that play to the strength of our brand.” As in, everyone wants to wear comfy pants with matching tops.

Designers have taken athleisure looks up a notch this year. Let’s take a look at some of the new collections to get excited for this fall.

What are the top athleisure trends for women to know this fall 2021?

1. Peloton

The fitness powerhouse announced earlier this month that it would begin selling its own private-label apparel. Peloton has always had apparel partnerships with Lululemon, Rhone, and Beyond Yoga. This will be the first time they’ve done their own private label collection. (Disclosure: our Founder & CEO is on the board of Peloton Interactive).

Peloton said the apparel is intended to enhance members’ lifestyles, not just one part of their day. Instead, the versatile collection is meant to translate from the gym to the office and beyond.

The collection is based around four types of fabric: Cadent, a stretchy, soft performance jersey with moderate compression; Move Mission, a quick-drying fabric for high-performance activities; Essential, a “second skin” fabric with light compression; and Lite Lines, a moisture-wicking lightweight jersey knit.

It is called  “On Point” and is made up of three categories: “Sweat,” clothing for higher-intensity workouts; “Live” with lighter fabrics made for just everyday life; and “Flow” for more moderate activities. Models for the line include soccer star Megan Rapinoe, freestyle skier Eileen Gu and ballet dancer India Bradley.

3. Prince and Melissa Wood Health

Melissa Wood’s online workout platform combining low impact yoga and Pilates to sculpt, skyrocketed during the pandemic and now she is teaming up with Prince, a global racquet sports and lifestyle brand on a new fitness apparel line.

The collection is sleek, stylish and already available. Think lots of clothes made for movement and feeling your flow. It includes bodysuits, bike shorts, bralettes, oversized socks, and scrunchies ranging from $15 to $175. “Prince VS MWH is the perfect collection to take you from the mat to the street,” Melissa Wood-Tepperberg said.

4. Alo Yoga

Los Angeles-based athleisure brand Alo also became a major staple during the pandemic. Maybe it is because their Instagram is just so beautiful or maybe it is because the clothes are so damn cool and are too attractive to just wear to a yoga studio. “Our high-performance line exceeds the standards of L.A.’s most committed yogis who demand maximum quality, innovative fabrics and on-trend styling,” shares the brand.

“Each and every garment is created by a design team of yoga enthusiasts and tested and retested on the best yogis to ensure the finest, most slimming, move-with-you fit that will elevate your every asana.” High waist flutter leggings, slit bras, ribbed cardigans, and sherpa jackets will be all the rage this fall.
