According to Gutierrez, the trick to achieving hydrated, smooth and supple skin during winter is simple. It involves a concept practically any lover of winter is familiar with: layering.

That’s right, just like dressing in layers to stay warm to hit the slopes, the secret to hydrated and dewy winter skin is layering your skincare products.  Not sure how to do it?  According to Gutierrez, these are the 6 essential steps and the luxury skincare products you need to look great this winter.

The luxury skincare products and rituals you need to look great this winter

1. step one: gently cleanse

If you haven’t gotten on the bandwagon yet, it’s time to change your daily cleanser to a cleansing balm or an oil-based cleanser.

Unlike gel or foaming cleansers that compromise the barrier of your skin, balms or oil-based cleansers work to protect the outer barrier of your skin. Which allows your skin to hold onto moisture. Gutierrez loves Darphin’s luxurious Aromatic Cleansing Balm with Rosewood for All Skin Types ($37) because it leaves the skin feeling clean and supple without the greasy residue. Plus it makes your bathroom smell like a spa.

For sensitive skin there’s Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil ($23).  Filled with antioxidants and vegetable oils, Gutierrez says it will help to clean and decongest impurities in the most gentle way.  Another favorite is Recipe’s Papaya Sorbet Smoothing Enzyme Cleansing Balm & Makeup Remover ($32) that smooths, resurfaces and soothes the skin with papaya enzymes.

2. step two: exfoliate with a toner

Using mild exfoliants like toners are an extremely important step in promoting hydrated and plumped-up skin. Mild acids sweep away the dry, dead skin cells that sit on the surface of the skin, and allow your products to penetrate more effectively. Among Gutierrez’s top picks are the cult favorite Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970 ($68).  She likens it to a magic potion that does it all – exfoliates, hydrates and balances the Ph of the skin.

Looking for something a little gentler?  Josh Rosebrook’s Daily Acid Toner ($29) helps resurface, soften and firm the skin while working to increase skin hydration. Gutierrez’s other favorite is the Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution ($9) from The Ordinary that offers mild exfoliation for improved skin radiance and clarity at a price that’s almost too good to be true.

3. step three: hydrate with a serum

Once you have swept away any unwanted dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, a hydrating serum will penetrate effectively creating the base layer of hydration.  Try Cos de BAHA’s Pure Hyaluronic Acid 1% Powder Solution Serum ($10) for its line-smoothing hydrating and plumping properties without a heavy feel.

K Beauty fans might enjoy Peach and Lily’s Glass Skin Refining Serum ($39).  According to Gutierrez, it creates glassy, luminous and translucent-looking skin by providing hydration. It also protects the skin from inflammation and free radical damage.

For a more traditional look, Klur’s Immersion Serum ($70) works to help support the skin’s barrier strength, balancing and plumping skin while improving moisture retention without clogging pores.

4. step four: apply a nourishing face oil

For optimal hydration layer a nourishing face oil on top of your serum says Gutierrez. It helps to lock in the essential fatty acids that the skin naturally provides in order to protect and repair the skin’s barrier from moisture loss.

Rose Hip Oil has numerous healing properties. Among them skin regeneration, anti-aging, elasticity and collagen production.  Not to mention the natural fatty acids in The Ordinary’s 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil ($10) help lock in moisture in the skin.  Gutierrez’s other selection is Biossance’s hydrating Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil ($70) that helps to visibly brighten and firm skin.  The squalene oil weightlessly locks in essential moisture while the vitamin C helps fight dryness, dullness and uneven texture.

5. step five: lock in moisturize

Believe it or not, according to Gutierrez there is still more moisturizing to be done!  Step five is to lock in all the hydrating layers with your moisturizer. This will help keep your skin protected from environmental stressors like wind and the harsh dry heat from heaters.

Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream ($29) has been Gutierrez’s favorite moisturizer since before the product’s launch when it was shared with only makeup artists, models and celebrities. It melts into the skin almost instantly and floods the skin with moisture, making it appear plumper and smoother.

Her other choice is Paula’s Choice Ceramide-Enriched Firming Moisturizer ($58).  This velvety moisturizer smoothes over the skin. It almost immediately makes it feel more supple and hydrated while the ceramides help fortify the skin’s protective barrier. It will keep your skin staying hydrated all day.

6. step six: maintenance mist

Wanna keep the dewy glow around all day?  Carry a hydrating mist with you to help keep your skin looking refreshed and glowing.  According to Gutierrez, Peach and Lily’s Glass Skin Veil Mist ($29) is an amazing facial mist that will keep skin replenished with hydration, antioxidants and calming ingredients. The cucumber and peach extracts feel refreshing and boosts your glow throughout the day.

Meanwhile, the name of Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Mist ($48) says it all.  It is almost like a spray moisturizer in consistency. Gutierrez promises that this product is super lightweight, and delivers glowing, dewy skin immediately upon application. It comes by its nickname honestly: glow in a bottle.
